The most expensive American car ever sold is a 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, which fetched $42,905,000 at Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach Auctions in August 2026. It more than doubled the old American record of $22 million, set by a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ in 2018. 1. 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe: $42,905,000
Carroll Shelby built the Daytona Coupe for one reason: to beat Ferrari in GT racing. Only six were made. This one, chassis CSX2300, debuted at the 1964 Tour de France Automobile with Bob Bondurant and Jochen Neerpasch, and it did not finish. It was the only Daytona raced by a privateer in period, and the only one Shelby ever owned himself. After a spell in Japan from 1966, where it was raced and driven on the street for about eight years, Shelby bought it and brought it home.
Gooding’s pre-sale estimate was around $25 million. The hammer fell at $39 million, and fees took the total to $42.9 million. That made it the dearest car of any nationality at auction in 2026 and the top sale of the Gooding house to date.

2. 1935 Duesenberg SSJ: $22,000,000
This SSJ Speedster is the one that belonged to film star Gary Cooper. It held the American record for eight years, until the Daytona Coupe passed it. Duesenberg is the American marque collectors treat as the pre-war peak, and the SSJ sat at the top of its range.

3. 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport (chassis 003): $18,705,000
Chevrolet built only five Grand Sports, lightweight Corvettes meant to take on the Shelby Cobra. This one, the first of three coupes, was campaigned by dealership owner Dick Doane to three SCCA class wins in 1963, then finished second in class at the 1964 Sebring 12 Hours and third in class in 1965. RM Sotheby’s estimated $11 to $13 million. It sold on August 15, 2026, and became the most expensive Corvette ever sold at auction. Interestingly, it landed on exactly the same figure as a 1963 Ferrari 250 P sold the same week.

4. 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra (CSX 2000): $13,750,000
CSX 2000 is the first Cobra Shelby built, the car that started the whole line. It sold at Monterey in August 2016 and was the American record for two years before the Duesenberg SSJ took over. Being number one of one is the whole value here.

5. 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage lightweight (P/1074): $11,000,000
The GT40 was Ford’s answer to Ferrari at Le Mans. This Gulf/Mirage lightweight racing example sold at Monterey in August 2012 and held a place near the top of the American list for years.

6. 1931 Duesenberg Model J long-wheelbase coupe: $10,340,000
Gooding sold this long-wheelbase Model J coupe at Pebble Beach in August 2011. The Model J was Duesenberg’s flagship, and the long chassis gave coachbuilders room for the biggest bodies.

7. 1935 Duesenberg Model JN convertible coupe: $9,080,000
RM Sotheby’s sold this one at Monterey in August 2026 for a Model JN record. Reports call it the third most expensive Duesenberg ever sold.

8. 1957 Chevrolet Corvette SS Project XP-64: $7,705,000
This was GM’s first purpose-built factory racer, led by Zora Arkus-Duntov. It had a tubular frame, a magnesium body and a fuel-injected 283 V8. It debuted at Sebring in 1957 with John Fitch and Piero Taruffi, but overheating ended its race after 23 laps. A racing ban from the auto industry then turned it into a museum piece. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum showed it from 1967 until it sold the car in February 2025 on a $7 million hammer. That set the Corvette record until the Grand Sport beat it 18 months later.

9. 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe (CSX2601): about $7,685,000
Another of the six Daytonas, sold at Monterey in August 2009. That was less than a fifth of what CSX2300 made in 2026, a fair sign of how far the market has moved. One source puts this sale a little higher, so treat the figure as approximate.

10. 1964 Ford GT40 prototype (GT/104): about $7,560,000
One of the earliest GT40 prototypes, sold by Mecum in Houston in April 2014. As an early prototype, it carries the story of Ford’s first attempt to beat Ferrari.

Records set in 2025 and 2026
- August 2026: the Daytona Coupe’s $42.9 million rewrote the American record, and the Corvette Grand Sport ($18.7 million) and Duesenberg JN ($9.08 million) both entered our top ten the same week.
- February 2025: the Corvette SS XP-64 reached $7.7 million, then a Corvette record.
- August 2026, other marques: a 1934 Packard Twelve Sport Phaeton made $4.3 million, a marque record, and a base 2006 Ford GT made $880,000 at Mecum, also a record for that model.
The gap between rank one and rank ten is enormous: the Daytona Coupe made more than five times the price of the tenth entry. Between them sit three distinct families of car: Shelby and Ford racers built to beat Ferrari, Chevrolet’s own racing Corvettes, and the coachbuilt Duesenbergs of the 1930s. Each family has its own buyers, which is why a record in one barely moves the others.

- Racing against Ferrari. Four of the ten (Daytona, Cobra, GT40, Grand Sport) exist because America wanted to beat Italy on track.
- Tiny production. Six Daytonas, five Grand Sports, one CSX 2000. Scarcity is the multiplier.
- One owner, one story. A car Shelby kept himself, or one built for Gary Cooper, sells for far more than a sister car.
- The pre-war peak. Duesenbergs show the other American path: coachbuilt luxury, not racing.
- Catching up. American cars lagged Ferrari prices for decades. The 2026 results suggest that gap is closing.
