5Artemis and the Stag – Price: $28.6 million
Artemis and the Stag is an early Roman Imperial bronze sculpture of the ancient Greek goddess Artemis.
As you can see in the photo, the sculpture depicts Artemis on a simple plinth. The Greek goddess stands at 36 1/4 inches atop a base of 12 1/2 inches, while the stag is 16 3/4 inches.
Believed to have been made between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, the statue was originally excavated in the 1920s from a Roman construction site and finally was brought to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York.
In June 2007, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Artemis and the Stag was placed into auction and was sold for $28.6 million, the highest sale price on any sculpture at the time.
