5Australia’s First Official Banknote – $310.000
The only surviving example of Australia’s first 10 shilling banknote was auctioned for $310.000.
There were 100 banknotes issued in 1817 and not even the Bank o New South Wales (now called Westpac) had a copy.
Jim Noble of Noble Numismatics is the one who handled the sale, saying : ‘It’s a record for a colonial banknote.
It will stay in Australia but I’ve no idea what the gentleman who bought it plans to do. He’s a high up executive in a big organisation. It would be exciting to see it on public display. It’s a great thing.’
