6. The Little Mermaid: $16.6 Million
It seems like Disney’s musicals are everywhere now, just like their movies. The amazing underwater world where Ariel, Flounder and the rest of the characters in Little Mermaid live had its own Broadway musical.
It started in January 2008 and with a budget estimated at $16.6 million, Little Mermaid didn’t do well, at least not like they expected.
It featured the original songs in the movie, plus new tunes by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.
With all the original songs and fancy costumes, the show closed after a year and a half. We cannot tell for sure if the producers managed to make any kind of profit, but we can say for sure that this wasn’t Disney’s best musical.
