Not all the coins presented in this list were sold at a coin auction. And this Brasher Doubloon was one of them.
It was placed in hands of a private collector by Blanchard and Company. The private collector paid over $7 million on the rare coin.
The difference between this coin the previous one, this one has his mark on the breast of the eagle.
Minted in 1787 by Ephraim Brasher, a silversmith and goldsmith in NYC, the coin contained at that time only $15 worth of gold.
Brasher submitted a petition to the State of New York to mint copper coins. However, the petition was denied but Brasher, who was already quite skillful, ignored the decision and went ahead minting coins anyway.
Mostly of his coins were made from bronze but there were some precious few in 22-carat gold.
One of those coins was a doubloon bought by a Wall Street investment firm for $7.4 million.
