4.Ruby Roman Grapes — $4.000 per bunch
One of Japan’s most expensive foods are the Ruby Roman Grapes.
And this is as luxurious and high-end as it can get. These grapes were introduced in 2008, and they have to meet some very high standards. Each grape must be the size of a ping pong ball, red, and must weigh over 20 grams, containing over 18% of sugar.
If that wasn’t enough, there is an even higher standard for the Ruby Roman Grapes, the premium class. This requires the grapes to weigh 30 grams each, and the entire fruit bunch must weigh a minimum of 700 grams.
And of course they are rare. In 2010 only 6 of them qualified for the premium class, and in 2011 none. In 2013 just a bunch of grapes met the standards, selling for $4.000.
That means that the berries worth $110 each. Well, I’ll be damned.
