The 10 destinations
1. Niseko, Japan
Niseko in Hokkaido is famous for light powder snow, known as Japow. Its resort areas include Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri.
The luxury end is strong. Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono opened in January 2020 with 100 rooms and 113 residences, a spa with private onsen rooms and a 25-metre indoor pool. The first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Japan is also in Niseko, at Higashiyama Niseko Village.
2. Beijing and Zhangjiakou, China
Beijing is one of the world’s most populous cities, and the Great Wall can be visited in winter. The 2022 Winter Olympics used three zones, Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, so the region has Olympic-standard ski terrain within reach of the capital.
Ski areas around the city include Wanlong in Zhangjiakou, Huabei and Nanshan. Distances from the centre vary, so check each resort.
3. Sapporo, Japan
Sapporo is the largest city on Hokkaido and hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first in Asia. Every February it runs a seven-day Snow Festival, which began in 1950 and fills Odori Park and Susukino with snow and ice sculptures.

4. Yamagata and Zao Onsen, Japan
Yamagata Prefecture is in Japan’s Tohoku region. Zao Onsen is known for juhyo, or snow monsters: conifer trees encrusted with rime ice by winter winds from Siberia. It also has hot springs, and the prefecture is known for Yonezawa beef.
5. Harbin, China
Harbin has the longest, coldest winter of any major Chinese city and holds the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, famous for illuminated ice sculptures and the ice lantern garden at Zhaolin Park.
Winter 2025 to 2026 showed the risk of warm winters: the Ice and Snow World opened on 17 December 2025 and was closed early on 21 February 2026 after record warmth. The 2026 to 2027 season is expected to open around late December 2026, though an official date had not been published when we checked. Last season’s ticket was reported at 328 yuan.
6. Seoul, South Korea
Seoul is South Korea’s capital and largest city, and its winters can be hard and cold. Grand Hyatt Seoul has an outdoor ice rink in winter, and the Shilla is a leading luxury hotel.
7. Muju, South Korea
Muju County in North Jeolla Province is best known for its Firefly Festival in June, but in winter the Muju Resort in Deogyusan National Park runs slopes including the Silk Road slope, which the resort says is the longest in South Korea.
8. Otaru, Japan
Otaru, northwest of Sapporo, is a port city on Ishikari Bay with historic buildings, fresh sushi and a canal that is lit up and glowing on winter nights. Canal cruises run short trips.
9. Huangshan, China
Huangshan, the Yellow Mountain in Anhui province, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 1990. Its granite peaks, pines and sea of clouds look their best under winter snow.
10. Shimla, India
Shimla, capital of Himachal Pradesh, was the summer capital of British India from 1864. It sits at the foot of the Himalayas and gets snow in winter, with temperatures that can fall below zero.
