N4. The Golden Bear – The Berlin International Film Festival
The Berlin International Film Festival is also known as the Berlinale and is one of the most popular movie awards in the world.
As a part of the “Big Three” film festivals, including those in Venice, Italy and in Cannes, this might be the largest festival in the world, if we consider the attendance rates.
The figure of a bear for the award was chosen because it is the heraldic animal of Berlin and can be found on the coat of arms and on the city’s flag.
It was first given in 1951. The festival was accredited by the FIAPF in 1956 with an international jury deciding the winners.
