He began by supplying distilleries that produced Thai whisky. The contacts he made there allowed him to produce his own alcoholic drinks under licence. When the remaining state licences came up for bid in the 1980s, he took out a large loan secured against his stocks of alcohol and went on to win all of the concessions.
