How much is Jamie Hyneman Worth? Jamie Hyneman Net Worth in 2026
Jamie Hyneman’s net worth is estimated at $9 million as of November 2026. After 13 years of MythBusters, we could not find one published figure for what the show paid him. The man who spent 13 years testing claims on camera left his own finances untested, so almost everything below is arithmetic on stated assumptions.
| Net worth | $9 million (rough estimate, range $5 million to $20 million) |
|---|---|
| Born | September 25, 1956, Marshall, Michigan (age 70) |
| Country | United States |
| Known for | Co-hosting MythBusters, running M5 Industries |

How Jamie Hyneman built it
- Kept the workshop. LUT University says he still uses M5 Industries for private research and product development.
- Stayed on as producer. A 2010 deal made him co-executive producer of MythBusters and set up a new production company.
- Took many odd jobs first. Sea captain, pet store owner, animal handler and chef all came before television.

Our figure is $9 million, in a range of $5 million to $20 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. What is on the record is the scale of the work, not the price of it.
Public estimates disagree because they start from guesses about per-episode pay, and those guesses run wild. Some also treat a top-line pay figure as money kept, with no tax taken off.
How we got to $9 million
| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| MythBusters pay, after tax | $6 million | The show ran to 296 episodes, specials and the revival included. He didn’t host the 2017 revival, so we assume about 270 were his, at $40,000 each, or $10.8 million. We then keep 55 percent after tax, which gives $5.9 million. Pay rate and tax are our assumptions. |
| M5 Industries | $2 million | He owns the San Francisco effects company and the show was filmed in his workshops. No accounts are public. The value is our assumption for the business, its equipment and past fees. |
| Speaking and advisory work since 2016 | $1 million | Assumed $200,000 a year before tax for 10 years, keeping 55 percent, which gives $1.1 million. His speakers bureau lists the fee as please inquire, so the rate is a guess. |
| Total | $9 million | Before rounding the rows are $5.9 million, $2 million and $1.1 million. We assume investment returns and 20 years of living costs cancel out. |
The $81 million sanity check
A pay claim of $300,000 per episode circulates online. Test it. By our calculation, $300,000 times about 270 episodes is $81 million before tax, for a co-host of a cable science show. We don’t believe it, and nothing we opened supports it.
Our own $40,000 is a low-confidence number too. But it produces something believable: $10.8 million over the 13 years from 2003 to 2016 is about $830,000 a year before tax, and roughly $457,000 after it. That is a very good living for a machinist with a degree in Russian linguistics. It isn’t a fortune.
Why the star didn’t own the show
Hyneman was talent and later a producer, not the proprietor. Discovery’s May 2010 announcement says the Australian company Beyond Productions made MythBusters, and that Hyneman and Adam Savage had signed a multi-year deal to co-executive produce it. They also formed a new production company to develop other Discovery series, with video games and a touring show in the plan. No price appears anywhere in that release.
That is why we give him no row for the show’s format or reruns. If he holds a share of either, this figure is too low.
His route there was odd enough to mention. Past jobs include sea captain, pet store owner, animal handler, concrete inspector and chef. His robot Blendo was deemed too dangerous for Robot Wars.
What he builds now, and what it pays
Since the show ended, the record shows plenty of invention and very little revenue. His Vortrex electric shoe fell short of its Indiegogo goal in 2017. The bureau bio lists fireproof firefighting tanks, blast-proof armor, fast naval vessels, a new type of PPE and geothermal technology. A KSL report from April 2016 had him designing a high-speed cargo ship for the US Navy. None of these comes with a disclosed contract, so none gets a row.
The latest dated item: LUT University in Finland appointed him professor of practice from November 15, 2021 to November 14, 2026, and that term ends this month. The university also says he advises ZeroAvia, the hydrogen aircraft startup.
A sale of M5, a paid product from the firefighting work, or any equity in ZeroAvia would move our figure more than another decade of speaking dates.
