How much is John Collison worth in 2026?

We put John Collison at about $15 billion, and the range is wide because his ownership percentage is not public. One analysis estimates the two brothers hold 20 to 25 percent together, so we assume 11 percent for John. Public estimates differ for the same reason, and because the company’s value changed so much: $50 billion in March 2023, $91.5 billion in February 2025, and $159 billion in a February 2026 tender offer.

How John Collison built it

  • Sold a company at 17. Auctomatic was acquired for $5 million in March 2008 when he was 17 years old.
  • Started with his brother. He and Patrick founded Stripe in 2010 and were billionaires by 2016.
  • Kept building. Stripe handled $1.9 trillion in payments in 2025 and announced a bid for PayPal in July 2026.

How we got to $15 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Assumed 11% of Stripe $17.5 billion TechCrunch reported that Stripe’s tender offer on February 24, 2026 valued it at $159 billion. Revenue Memo estimates the Collison brothers hold 20 to 25 percent of the equity between them, which is an outside estimate (Stripe publishes no ownership). We assume 11 percent for John, about half of 22 percent. 11% of $159 billion is $17.5 billion.
Minus discount for a private holding Minus $2.6 billion An assumed 15% for illiquidity and tax, since shares cannot be sold freely.
Other assets and cash $0.1 billion An allowance that includes his share of Auctomatic, sold for $5 million in 2008, and the Irish estates (Abbeyleix Estate and Millbrook House) that Wikipedia says he bought in 2021 and 2022. Prices are not public.
Total About $15 billion $17.5 – $2.6 + $0.1 billion.

Each point of ownership we add or remove changes the headline by about $1.35 billion after the discount, so the 10 to 12.5 percent implied by the outside estimate gives $13.6 to $17.0 billion.

A teenager who already had an exit

Wikipedia’s entry on Collison shows that in March 2008 the start-up Auctomatic, which his earlier venture merged into, was acquired for $5 million when he was 17. Two years later he and Patrick started Stripe. In November 2016 an investment from CapitalG and General Catalyst valued Stripe at $9.2 billion and made the brothers the youngest self-made billionaires in the world.

The move from $91.5 billion to $159 billion

Here is our calculation. On our assumed 11%, February 2025’s $91.5 billion valuation is worth $10.1 billion and February 2026’s $159 billion is worth $17.5 billion, so the stake rose by $7.4 billion in a year. Wikipedia’s Stripe entry records payment volume of $1.9 trillion in 2025, up 34 percent from 2024, which is the underlying reason.

The deals around the number

On July 15, 2026 Stripe and Advent International made a joint offer for PayPal of $60.50 a share, valuing it above $53 billion, per DealStreetAsia; PayPal’s directors reportedly thought it undervalued the company, and we found no outcome. The same entry says Stripe announced the acquisition of OpenRouter on August 19, 2026 for $7.5 billion, though Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal were reported to put it at more than $7 billion. Earlier, it closed the $1.1 billion Bridge acquisition in February 2025. None of these gives Collison cash; they change what the company is worth.

Why other estimates disagree

Public estimates use an unpublished ownership share and a valuation from whichever tender offer was latest when they were written. Some of the gap is only timing.

What would move the figure

The outcome of the PayPal bid, a new tender offer, or a filing that discloses the brothers’ holdings. A tender at $200 billion would lift our estimate to about $18.8 billion on the same stake and discount.
