John Legend is is an American singer, songwriter, musician and actor and his current net worth is $50 million.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, he is one of four children of Phyllis Elaine, a seamstress, and Ronald Lamar Stephens, a factory worker.

Growing up his mother homeschooled him on and off, and at four years old he used to perform with his church choir.

At seven years old, John started playing the piano. Two years later, he went to North High School, from where he graduated salutatorian of his class, four years later.

After which, Harvard University offered him admission and he also received scholarships to Georgetown University and Morehouse College.

However, he chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied English with an emphasis on African-American literature.

While there, he became the president and musical director of a co-ed jazz and Counterparts, a pop a cappella group.

He received critical acclaim for landing Joan Osborne’s One of Us song on the track list, after he led vocals to the group’s recording.

John also served as a member of the famous senior societies Sphinx Senior Society and Onyx Senior Honor Society, while still in college.

While still at the University he met Lauryn Hill, who hired him to play piano on Everything Is Everything, a song from her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Meanwhile, he started to have a couple of shows all around Philadelphia, and eventually expanded to New York, Boston, Atlanta, among others.

After graduation he started producing, writing and recording his own music, releasing two albums independently.

While he wrote the songs and recorded his own music he used to work as a management consultant for the Boston Consulting Group.

During the same period, he also sent his demo to various record labels. There he met the up-and-coming hip-hop artist Kanye West who hired Legend to sing during the hooks of his music.

Shortly after, Kanye West signed him to his label and John chose the stage name John Legend from an idea given to him by poet J. Ivy.

How did John Legend get famous?

Then in December 2004, Legend released his debut album, Get Lifted under the GOOD Music record label.

The album, which featured production by Kanye West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am. It sold more than 500,000 copies in the US and received gold by the RIAA.

Get Lifted also reached #1 of the Norwegian Albums Charts as well as won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

During the time his album charted in most of the tops, Legend also co-wrote Janet Jackson’s I Want You. The song received a platinum certificate and a Grammy Award nomination.

After this, he became a sought after collaborator and he featured on several records in the next years including on the albums of Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, among others.

Before releasing his second album, Once Again, Legend performed on Super Bowl XL in Detroit. He also performed at the halftime show at the NBA All-Star Game.

For his second album, he re-teamed with Kanye West and will.i.am, but also included production from Craig Street, Sa-Ra, Eric Hudson, among others.

The album reached major commercial success and peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart.
