Katy Perry or Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born in Santa Barbara, California as the daughter of Pentecostal pastors Mary Christine and Maurice Keith Hudson.

Niece of film director Frank Perry, Katy has a younger brother named David, who is also a singer, and an older sister Angela.

Until the age of eleven, Katy and her family kept moving across the country because her parents set up churches, but returned again in Santa Barbara.

She attended religious schools and camps, while growing up and their financial status wasn’t a great one, sometimes they used food stamps and eating from the food bank intended to feed the congregation at the church.

Growing up, Katy primarily listened to gospel music as secular music was discouraged in the house, but discovered popular music thanks to her friends and the CD they gave her.

Thanks to her sister Angela, whom she followed closely when they were young Katy began singing by practicing with her sister’s cassette tapes.

She sang in front of her parents who suggested that she take vocal lessons and began training at the age of nine.

The artist used to sing in her parents church from until she was 17 years old. At the age of 13, she received her first guitar as a gift for her birthday and publicly performed songs she wrote.

Katy took dancing lessons and learned how to swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.

But after spending her entire childhood singing in church, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Her first debut studio album was Katy Hudson under her birth name, in 2001, thanks to the deal she signed with Red Hill Records.

Thanks to the success of the album, she was able to move to Los Angeles the following year and got serious about her singing career and began working with producers like Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin, after Red Hill ceased operations.

She adopted the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.

She didn’t have her breakthrough until 2008 when released the singles “I Kissed a Girl” which sparked controversy for its homosexual themes, and “Hot n Cold” from her second album, titled “One of the Boys”.

And since then she just kept getting bigger and bigger, and with the release of other three albums, she keeps getting closer to everyone’s hearts and keeps getting recognition and many many awards.

Throughout her career, Perry has sold 100 million records globally, and is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time.

When it comes to acting, she has released an autobiographical documentary titled Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012, and voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013.
