How much is Marie Kondo worth in 2026?

Our figure is $14 million, in a range of $8 million to $25 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. Book counts are public, and the Rakuten and Netflix terms aren’t.

Public estimates disagree partly because they cite a stale number. One older figure keeps getting repeated with no working shown, and the copy counts used alongside it range from five million to eight million for the same book. We count the household’s money from the books and the company together, because her husband, Takumi Kawahara, co-established KonMari Media and runs it as CEO, and no public record separates the two.

How Marie Kondo built it

  • Started consulting at 19. She ran a tidying consultant business as a university student in Tokyo before any book.
  • Took one idea across borders. The first book reached over eight million copies worldwide by April 2018.
  • Brought in a big backer. Rakuten became majority shareholder of KonMari Media in August 2019.

How we got to $14 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Book royalties $18 million More than eight million copies of the first book were reported worldwide by April 2018. Assumption: four million more across her other titles and later sales, or 12 million at $1.50 each. We use a low rate because so many are foreign editions, where agents and publishers share the rights money.
KonMari Media and the Rakuten deal $10 million Rakuten became majority shareholder in August 2019 and disclosed no price. Reports that March said the company was seeking up to $40 million in funding. No valuation was reported, so we assume a $50 million value at that date, and 20 percent of it for the couple in cash and remaining shares.
Netflix $1.1 million Assumption: $100,000 per episode across eight episodes in 2019 and three in 2021. Her husband is an executive producer, and the fees are private.
Speaking and ambassador work $1 million Assumption: $100,000 a year for 10 years, including her role as Rakuten’s Joy Ambassador.
Income tax minus $12 million Assumption: 40 percent of the $30.1 million above.
Living costs minus $4 million Assumption: $400,000 a year for 10 years, for a family based in Los Angeles as of a January 2022 Stanford event.
Total $14.1 million, rounded to $14 million Mostly assumptions, with book counts as the firmest part.

Sixty cents of every dollar came from paper

By our calculation books account for $18 million of the $30.1 million she earned before tax, which is 60 percent. For someone known to most of the world through a television show, that is a surprising split, and she had been running a tidying consultant business since she was a 19-year-old university student in Tokyo long before any of it. The US alone had taken more than 2.85 million copies of her two titles by October 2016, and the first book had then spent 98 weeks on the bestseller list, 68 of them at number one. Netflix didn’t arrive until January 2019.

The series did something the royalties couldn’t. It made a company worth funding. Within three months of the premiere, reports had her seeking up to $40 million, after a small round led by Sequoia Capital the year before. Five months after that, Rakuten had control.

Whose shop is it

The KonMari shop opened on November 18, 2019, with about 150 items priced from $10 to $300. A woman famous for telling people to own less started selling them things. Commercially the store and the 2021 storage line with The Container Store, more than 100 products, belong to the company, so her share depends on a stake she no longer controls. The same goes for the certified consultant program, active in over 30 countries. It is why we don’t credit her with shop revenue separately: it sits inside the $10 million row.

What could move the number

That row is the weak point. Each $10 million change in our assumed company value moves her 20 percent by $2 million before tax, or $1.2 million after our 40 percent, so a true price of $100 million would add $6 million. As of 2026 the business is still active: KonMari’s own site opened the year promoting its consultant program and its club, which was enrolling for 2026. We found no 2025 or 2026 document on revenue or on Rakuten’s holding. A sale of Rakuten’s stake or a filing that names the 2019 price would change this page more than any new book.
