Early life and background
Martin Charles Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942, in Queens, New York, to Charles and Catherine Scorsese, who both worked in New York City’s Garment District. The family moved to Little Italy in Manhattan before he started school.
He suffered from asthma as a child and could not play sports, so his parents and older brother often took him to the movies. That sparked his passion for cinema. At Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx he wanted to become a priest, but he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English at New York University and an M.F.A. from its film school.
His early shorts included What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? (1963) and The Big Shave (1967). He cited his film professor Haig P. Manoogian and filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini as influences.
