How much is Mookie Betts worth in 2026?
We estimate about $85 million. The contract numbers are as firm as sports money gets, because the AP published the schedule in 2020. Tax, endorsements and spending are our assumptions.
Public estimates scatter widely, and the reason is simple: some count the full $365 million as if it were in the bank, while others stop at older salary totals and ignore the deferred money he has already earned.
How Mookie Betts built it
- Took the Red Sox to arbitration. He asked for $10.5 million in 2018, Boston offered $7.5 million, and the panel chose his number.
- Traded cash now for later. $115 million of his deal is deferred and pays out each July 1 from 2033 to 2044.
- Skipped college for a bonus. A fifth-round pick in 2011, he took $750,000, above slot, over a University of Tennessee commitment.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Pay before the Dodgers extension, after tax | $21.6 million | A $750,000 draft bonus, about $0.5 million for 2015 (our assumption, as we could not open a salary record for that year), $566,000 for 2016, $950,000 for 2017, $10.5 million for 2018 and $20 million for 2019, then $10 million for shortened 2020. That is about $43.3 million, and we assume half is kept, the same rule we use on our baseball rankings. His short 2014 season isn’t counted because we couldn’t confirm it. |
| Dodgers cash through November 2026, after tax | $55 million | Salaries of $130 million for 2021 to 2026, less $50 million deferred, plus six $5 million bonus installments. That is $110 million, halved. We assume the November 1, 2026 payment was made on schedule. |
| Deferred pay already earned, today’s value, after tax | $16 million | $50 million of the deferred money is already earned. Matched to the earliest payments, that’s five of $8 million from July 2033 and $10 million in July 2038. Discounted at 5 percent (our assumption) from each date back to November 2026, it’s worth about $31.9 million, halved. |
| Endorsements and side work, after tax | $11 million | Our assumption: $2 million a year for 11 years, or $22 million, halved. Fox Business listed Nike, BodyArmor, New Era and Axe Bat in 2018, with no amounts. No trustworthy figure exists. |
| Charity written into the contract | Minus $0.6 million | The deal requires $100,000 a year, for six years so far. |
| Spending | Minus $17.5 million | Our assumption: 20 percent of the $87.6 million in cash kept above. Homes stay in the total as assets. |
| Total | $85.5 million, rounded to $85 million | No investment gains or postseason shares are counted. |
The $365 million that arrives in pieces
The structure is stranger than the headline. The AP’s contract terms, as printed by Boston.com, list $65 million in signing bonus plus $300 million in salaries, which accounts for the entire $365 million. So we read the $115 million of deferred money as coming out of those salaries, since it can’t sit on top of them. The AP didn’t spell that out, and its report says only that the deal “includes” the deferrals.
On that reading his 2026 salary of $25 million was $15 million in cash, with $10 million pushed to the late 2030s. Add the $5 million installment each November 1 and his 2026 Dodgers cash comes to $20 million.
By our calculation, $110 million of $365 million is 30 percent of the deal paid after 50 percent of the seasons. The bonus was also built with care: the AP noted that because he wasn’t a California resident at signing, those installments wouldn’t face California’s top rate of 12.3 percent. We don’t credit him for that in the ledger, since his residence may have changed. He bought a $7.6 million Encino mansion from Chip Kelly in late 2020, a nine-bedroom place with a full basketball court.
He took the Red Sox to a hearing and won
In 2018 he asked for $10.5 million and Boston offered $7.5 million. A three-person panel picked his number, up from $950,000 the year before. That’s a raise of more than 11 times. A year later he got $20 million. Seven years earlier he had skipped a University of Tennessee commitment for that $750,000 bonus as a fifth-round pick, above slot value.
What would move the figure
The contract runs through 2032 and pays $25 million in 2027 before rising to $30 million from 2028 to 2030. If he’s traded, the deferrals go away and the money is due in each season, which would pull later cash forward. He has no no-trade clause. The latest title we can confirm came in 2025, his fourth World Series and third with the Dodgers.
