Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, out of a computer specialist and an artist, her family moved to Canada at the age of two. She grew up in Toronto, Ontario with her older brother Aleksandar.
Nina started ballet and jazz classes while attending Vradenburg Junior Public School and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School. She also competed in rhythmic gymnastics and took acting classes at Armstrong Acting Studios in Toronto. Subsequently, she attended the arts program at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough.
She majored in Sociology at Ryerson University in Toronto, but did not graduate because she pursued an acting career.

Her first major role started in 2006 in the teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation with fellow co-star Drake. She appeared in several movies during this time, including Fugitive Pieces and MTV’s The American Mall.
