Robert Herjavec is a Croatian-Canadian businessman, investor, and television personality and his current net worth is $250 million.

Born in Varaždin, Croatia, his family left the country when he turned eight years old.

Before leaving the country, which incarcerated his father for speaking out against the regime, they lived in Zbjeg.

With only $20 and a suitcase, his family left the country moving to Halifax, eventually settling in Toronto.

While there, they lived for 18 months in the basement of a family friend’s home.

For the young Herjavec, the transition proved to be difficult because he spoke no English.

Growing up on a farm and raised by his grandmother in a lifestyle poorer than of his neighbor, he went to New College at the University of Toronto.

In 1984 he graduated from college with a degree in English literature and political science.

His father used to work in a Mississauga factory, making $76/ week or $464.26, adjusted for inflation.

During his childhood, his father, who used to walk to work to save money on bus fare, became a major influence on his life.

When his mother bought a vacuum cleaner for $500, a seven weeks’ salary, because a traveling salesman persuaded her, he swore his family would never be taken advantage of again.

He had to work a variety of minimum wage jobs, such as waiter, to help support his family.

How did Robert get famous?

Robert made his debut in film at an early age after quickly moving from behind the camera in front of it, for various production roles.

His highest point of his career came as a Field Producer of the XIV Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, for Global TV. There he received the honor of one of the youngest producers of Olympic coverage.

While still working in the film industry, he applied for a position at a company which sold IBM mainframe emulation boards.

His qualifications didn’t match the job description, but he convinced them to give it to him by offering to work for free for six months.

But eventually rose in the ranks and became general manager of the company.

In 1990, he got fired from the company and went on and established his own.

Called BRAK System, the Canadian integrator of Internet security software, he created it from the basement of his home.

How does Robert make money?

In 2000 he sold it to AT&T Canada for $30.2 million.

It followed a period where he became a stay-home-dad for his three children. After he founded the security solution integrator, reseller and manager of service provider called Herjavec Group. He is currently the CEO of the company, which became one of Canada’s fastest-growing technology companies.

Apart from his business career, he has appeared as a regular on the Canadian CBC Television series Dragons’ Den. He has also appeared on ABC’s version of the series, Shark Tank, alongside his colleagues, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Kevin O’Leary, and Barbara Corcoran.

For his work in television he has earned several awards, including three Gemini Awards as part of Dragon’s Den for Outstanding Reality Show in Canada.

In 2015 he has become one of the contestants of season 20 of the Dancing with the Stars reality series.

While on the show, he met his wife, Australian dancer, Kym Johnson.

He has also written two books, Driven: How to Succeed in Business and Life (2010) and The Will to Win: Leading, Competing, Succeeding (2013).

He currently resides in Bridle Path, Toronto, where he bought a $7.5 million mansion.
