How much is Tobias Lutke worth in 2026?

We estimate Lutke at about $12.7 billion, and 97 percent of it is a share count from a securities filing multiplied by one share price. That makes this better documented than most fortunes. It also makes it jumpy: we use the November 2, 2026 close of $156.22, the last one before Shopify’s third quarter results.

How Tobias Lutke built it

  • Built the tool himself. He wrote the Snowdevil store in Ruby on Rails in 2004, and that software became Shopify in 2006.
  • Took a C$1 salary. His base pay stayed at C$1 in 2025, with almost all of his $35.0 million award in options.
  • Locked in voting control. A single Founder Share keeps his votes at 40 percent or more on about 6 percent of the shares.

How we got to $12.7 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Shopify shares $12.35 billion The 2026 management circular lists 77,750,132 Class B shares and 1,290,000 Class A shares held directly or through his holding company as of April 21, 2026. That is 79,040,132 shares at the $156.22 close on November 2, 2026.
Stock options $298 million The circular lists 4,220,314 options. Three grants in the year-end table have clear counts and strikes, and at $156.22 they are worth $226.6 million. We could not read the split of the other 948,950, so we assume the average of their three strikes, $81.38, which adds $71.0 million.
Restricted share units $22 million 140,275 units in the circular, at $156.22. Some have not vested.
Cash from recent sales $30 million A March 2026 Form 144 and a June 2026 one list $46.0 million of sales before the April share count. We assume 35 percent tax, which leaves $29.9 million. Older cash is unknown and left out, and some of this may belong to his foundation.
Total $12.7 billion $12.70 billion from the rows above.

We take no tax off shares he has not sold. We also leave out the 258,000 Class A shares held by Thistledown Foundation, worth $40.3 million at this price: the circular deems them his for ownership purposes, but foundation money is not his to spend. Shares sold after April 21 still count at today’s price instead of as cash, because the filings don’t split them between him and the foundation. On the 329,813 shares listed through June 3, that is about $52 million at this price, under half a percent of the total.

$1 salary, $205 million in awards, $1.4 billion in twelve days

The circular shows total compensation of $20.0 million in 2023, $150.0 million in 2024 and $35.0 million in 2025. That adds up to $205.0 million, or 1.6 percent of our headline (our calculation).

Now the share price. Shopify closed at $174.29 on October 21, 2026 and $156.22 on November 2. An $18.07 drop on 79,040,132 shares is $1.43 billion. Across the past 52 weeks the stock ranged from $94 to $180.88, and that $86.88 gap on the same shares is $6.9 billion, more than half the fortune.

6 percent of the shares, 40 percent of the votes

With 1,298,375,874 voting shares outstanding, his 79.0 million are 6.1 percent of the company by our count. His voting power in the circular is 40.02 percent. A single Founder Share does the work: it tops his votes up to at least 40 percent, capped at 49.9 percent. In April that one share carried 1.78 percent of all votes on its own, and if his holdings shrink it carries more, so selling some stock need not cost him control.

A snowboard shop that needed software

Lutke moved from Germany to Canada in 2003, and in 2004 he and two partners started Snowdevil, an online snowboard store. He built the storefront himself in Ruby on Rails, and the software became the business. Shopify launched in 2006 and listed in 2015. Wikipedia’s account has him drawing no salary early on and living cheaply in his future in-laws’ home for about a decade, a habit the C$1 salary seems to continue in spirit.

He is selling, on a plan

The Form 144 notices describe sales under trading plans adopted on December 8, 2025. The June filing lists 605,630 shares sold from March 18 to June 3, 2026 for $73.7 million, and proposes up to 690,000 more, worth $81.9 million at the May 29 price of $118.71. The filings say the shares come from Thistledown Foundation and his holding company, without splitting them. A Form 144 is a notice of intent, so the proposed sales may not all have happened. Compared with 79 million shares, this barely registers.

Why other estimates disagree, and what would move this one

Public estimates mostly differ by the date of the share price, and at 79 million shares a few weeks can move the answer by more than a billion dollars. Some count the foundation’s shares or leave out the options.

The next mover is immediate. Shopify said it would report third quarter results before the market opened on November 3, 2026. Every $1 on the stock changes his wealth by about $79 million, before the options.
