10. Saint Laurent Paris (1961)
We will start our list about the oldest fashion houses with Saint Laurent Paris!
Saint Laurent Paris was founded in 1961 by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé. Yves Saint Laurent was named the creative director of Dior when he was only 21, in 1967. While being in the military he suffered a nervous breakdown and he was also fired by Dior, which aggravated his condition.
After his release from the hospital in November 1960, Yves Saint Laurent sued Dior for breach of contract and won. He and his partner founded their own fashion house in 1961 with funds from American millionaire J. Mack Robinson.
Yves Saint Laurent spent his childhood in Oran, Algeria making costumes for his sister’s dolls while dreaming of living in Paris. He is best known for its prêt-à-porter collections and for Le Smoking, the trend-settling evening trouser-suit for women.
