Many of Hollywood’s biggest names started in the background. Here is how those humble first jobs turned into fortunes.
1. George Clooney: about $500 million
George Clooney‘s first role was as an extra in the 1978 miniseries Centennial, partly filmed in his hometown of Augusta, Kentucky. He broke through years later on ER and became a leading man in Ocean’s Eleven (2001). In 2013 he co-founded Casamigos Tequila, which Diageo bought in June 2017 for $700 million, with up to $300 million more depending on later performance.
How we valued it: if the three co-founders split the $700 million upfront equally, his share was roughly $233 million, and we add decades of lead-role pay (he earned an estimated $239 million in the year to June 2018 including the sale) plus property. Our estimate is about $500 million.
2. Clint Eastwood: about $400 million
Clint Eastwood picked up uncredited and minor parts in the mid-1950s, including four hours of work on Never Say Goodbye (1955) and an uncredited ranch hand in Star in the Dust. Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy made him a star in the 1960s, and as a director he won Best Director and Best Picture for Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). He is now a retired actor and filmmaker.
How we valued it: no deals or filings are public, so we work from decades of lead-role salaries and a share of box office through his production company, the Malpaso Company, plus the films he directed, at about $400 million.
3. Sylvester Stallone: about $400 million
Sylvester Stallone tried and failed to land a job as an extra in The Godfather in 1972, then took a barely visible background part in What’s Up, Doc?. He also appeared uncredited in Bananas (1971) and as an extra dancing in a club in Klute (1971). He wrote Rocky (1976) and later launched The Expendables franchise in 2010.
How we valued it: lead-role salaries, writing and producing credits on the Rocky and Rambo series, and the Expendables films add up to about $400 million in our model.
4. Jackie Chan: about $350 million
Jackie Chan was an extra and a stunt double in Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury (1972), and he played a minor henchman in Enter the Dragon (1973). He built a career in Hong Kong, then broke into Hollywood with Rush Hour (1998) and its two sequels. He has received stars on the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
How we valued it: decades of film fees and producing income across Hong Kong, Chinese and Hollywood films, which we put at about $350 million.
5. Brad Pitt: about $350 million
Brad Pitt‘s screen career began in 1987 with uncredited roles in No Way Out, No Man’s Land and Less than Zero. He later won an Academy Award for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He also earned money as a producer through his company Plan B.
How we valued it: lead-role fees and producing income give about $350 million. We could not ground a figure for his wine and property holdings, so they are not counted.
6. Jennifer Aniston: about $300 million
Jennifer Aniston had an uncredited minor role in Mac and Me in 1988. She became a household name as Rachel Green on Friends (1994 to 2004) and has starred in comedies that together grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, including Bruce Almighty (2003).
How we valued it: her per-episode pay on Friends, film fees, and her producing income come to about $300 million.
7. Ben Affleck: about $150 million
Ben Affleck made an uncredited appearance as a basketball player in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film in 1992 before co-writing Good Will Hunting (1997) with Matt Damon. As a director he made Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010) and Argo (2012). He and Damon co-own the production company Artists Equity.
How we valued it: acting and directing fees plus producing income give about $150 million.
8. Renée Zellweger: about $100 million
Renée Zellweger had an uncredited role in Dazed and Confused (1993). She broke through in Jerry Maguire (1996), earned Best Actress nominations for Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Chicago (2002), and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Cold Mountain (2003).
How we valued it: lead-role fees, including the Bridget Jones series, give about $100 million.

Who is the richest actor who started as an extra?
On our estimates it is George Clooney, at about $500 million, helped by the 2017 Casamigos sale to Diageo.
Did Clooney start as an extra?
Yes. His first role was as an extra in the 1978 miniseries Centennial, partly filmed in his hometown of Augusta, Kentucky.
Which stars appeared in Bruce Lee films as extras?
Jackie Chan was an extra and stunt double in Fist of Fury (1972) and played a minor henchman in Enter the Dragon (1973).
Why did you remove some names?
Some names from earlier editions, such as Marilyn Monroe, Channing Tatum, Matt Damon and Bruce Willis, were dropped because we could not verify their extra work in sources we opened. Monroe died in 1962.
How are the net worth figures estimated?
They are our own estimates built from salaries, producing income and deals such as the Casamigos sale, since actors do not file public financial statements.
How we estimate net worth
Our estimates are based on public reporting, company valuations, and deal and earnings figures all compiled in an internal valuation model. They are approximate, and figures change over time as new information emerges.
For this list we used documented deals, reported pay, and the scale of each star’s film and production work. Where no deal was public we say so.
