15 Things You Didn’t Know about The Weeknd

3. His love towards his Ethiopian root

Besides those two ladies and his music, The Weeknd has another love of his life: his Ethiopian root. Born from Ethiopian parents, he is proud of his root.

In fact, he speaks fluent Amharic, which is the Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia. And that is indeed his first language. He learned this from his grandmother whom he spent most of his time with growing up since his father was away and mother was busy working.

Besides Ethiopian language, his grandmother also got him to learn Ethiopian Orthodox religion. She would take him to services at the church when he was a kid.

And as mentioned earlier, he even donated a big amount of money to University of Toronto to support the learning of classic Ethiopian language. The amount given was $50,000.
