N2. THE EYRIE- THE VALE
Situated deep in the Mountains of the Moon on the northeast of Westeros, the Eyrie is well the safest castle in the Seven Kingdoms.
The castle’s heir, likes to boast that the castle is “impregnable.” Since the valley was conquered by the Targaryens like every kingdom in Westeros (except Dorne), the Eyrie certainly is not bombproof place.
It is protected by series of unclimbable mountain peaks and guard towers on the approaches to the main castle, and also the ultimate entrance is only accessible by ladder or mechanical elevator.
The Eyrie is legendary on the show for its sky cells, many-sided rooms graven into the aspect of the mountain that almost drove Tyrion mad before he was released once his trial by combat.
The Eyrie’s signature sweetness, though, is its Moon Door, a crescent hatch graven into the floor of the main hall, wherever the Lords of the valley “make the bad man fly” down the 600-foot drop as a way of execution.
We now remember Tyrion’s first trial by combat and who else “learned to fly” in the 4th season.
