The Four Seasons and Le Mount Stephen follow close behind.

Where should you stay in Montreal?
Montreal’s luxury hotels cluster in two places. The Golden Square Mile, at the foot of Mount Royal, has the big international brands and the shopping on Sherbrooke Street. Old Montreal has the stone conversions of old banks and warehouses, with cobbled streets outside the door. Pick the district first and the shortlist almost writes itself.
The 10 best luxury hotels in Montreal, ranked
1. The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal
The Ritz-Carlton reopened in 2012 after a multi-year restoration reported at $200 million. It has 129 rooms and suites, private residences in the same building, and a rooftop pool heated year-round. The signature restaurant is Maison Boulud, run by chef Daniel Boulud.
We rank it first because it pairs the strongest product with the strongest recognition. In a 2026 reader-voted ranking of Canadian hotels it reportedly placed fourth nationally, the highest of any Montreal property.
2. Four Seasons Hotel Montreal
The Four Seasons opened in 2019 in the Golden Square Mile. Listings give roughly 170 rooms and suites, plus an indoor pool under a skylight and a direct indoor link to the Holt Renfrew Ogilvy department store. Marcus, the restaurant by chef Marcus Samuelsson, was his Canadian debut.
It placed seventh among Canadian hotels in the same 2026 reader-voted ranking. Nothing else in the city is as new and purpose-built, which counts in its favour.
3. Le Mount Stephen
This hotel sleeps in the 1880s mansion of Lord George Stephen on Drummond Street, once home to the Mount Stephen Club. It opened on 1 May 2017 after a delay of nearly two years, and it belongs to Leading Hotels of the World. Listings put it at about 90 rooms and suites.
Bar George serves British classics to up to 200 guests, and the hotel received a Michelin Key in September 2024. We place it third for heritage and for being the one place where the building is as much of a draw as the room.
4. Hotel William Gray
William Gray sits on Rue Saint-Vincent in Old Montreal, with about 125 rooms according to booking listings, a spa, the Maggie Oakes restaurant and two seasonal rooftop spaces, Terrasse William Gray and Perche.
It was tenth in the 2026 reader-voted Canadian ranking, which makes it the third Montreal hotel in the national top ten. Choose it for Old Montreal with a modern bed.
5. Sofitel Montréal Golden Mile
Sofitel finished a renovation in spring 2025 at 1155 Sherbrooke Street West. The tourism board lists 256 rooms for the renovated hotel, although another section of the same page shows 169, so treat the count as approximate.
We rank it fifth because a renovation completed this recently resets the clock on the rooms, and because its Golden Square Mile address keeps the museums and Sherbrooke Street shopping within a short walk.
6. Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
The Queen Elizabeth went through a closure of about a year and a renovation of more than $140 million, finished in 2017, and the hotel now lists about 950 rooms plus 100 suites. It connects to Central Station and the underground city, which makes winter travel easy.
Families and groups will like it, since it puts everything under one roof. The size is also why it sits sixth rather than higher.
7. W Montreal
W moved into the former Banque du Canada building on Square Victoria in Old Montreal and keeps 152 rooms and suites. The old bank building gives the hotel its character, and Old Montreal’s restaurants are on the doorstep.
We could not confirm a recent room refresh or the current restaurant line-up, so it lands in the middle of the list. Check availability and current dining before you book.
8. Hôtel Nelligan
The Nelligan occupies several 19th-century buildings knitted together at 106 Rue Saint-Paul Ouest in Old Montreal, with about 105 rooms. Montreal’s tourism board says it closed in January 2026 and finished its renovation in May 2026.
It earns eighth place because it is newly refreshed and well placed. A freshly finished renovation is a good reason to see it, but we want a full season of guest feedback before moving it higher.
9. Hôtel Le Germain Montréal
The Mansfield Street hotel has about 101 rooms and a loft-style design in a converted office building. The brand is expanding: a second Le Germain at the Casino de Montréal, with 220 rooms, is planned for the end of 2027 or early 2028.
The most relaxed hotel on the list, and a sensible choice for a business trip that needs good design more than a grand lobby.
10. Vogue Hotel Montreal Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton
This is the former Loews Hôtel Vogue on Rue de la Montagne. Listings now carry the Curio Collection name and show 142 rooms. We could not confirm the exact date of the rebrand from the sources available, so check the brand before booking.
The location, close to McGill University and Sherbrooke Street, keeps it in the top ten even without the recognition of the hotels above it.
What changed in Montreal hotels since this list was first published?
The old list stopped being accurate in several places. Hôtel Le St-James, the Old Montreal bank conversion that once ranked second, closed in 2022 after two decades, and the owner blamed the pandemic. We removed it, along with Le Saint-Sulpice, Hotel Le Crystal and Hôtel Saint-Paul, which we could not re-verify as operating at luxury standard in 2026.
New or returning names include Hôtel SonoLux (reportedly 36 rooms, opened November 2025) and Hôtel Railwayparc (reportedly 73 rooms, opened June 2025 under a Hilton collection brand), along with the freshly renovated Sofitel. The InterContinental Montréal, with around 357 rooms, reportedly closed in February 2026 for work and is due back in 2027.
Which hotel is best for which trip?
- Best overall: The Ritz-Carlton, for service and the rooftop pool.
- Best for heritage: Le Mount Stephen or Hotel William Gray.
- Best for families and winter trips: Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, because of the indoor connections.
- Best for design on a business trip: Hôtel Le Germain Montréal.
- Best newly refreshed pick: Sofitel Montréal Golden Mile.

How we put this list together
We rebuilt this list by checking each hotel’s operating status, room count and recent renovations against tourism-board and hotel listings, and by comparing 2026 guest-vote results for Canada. Room counts vary between listings, so figures are approximate and may change.
