Bill Gurley’s net worth is estimated at $220 million as of November 2026. He led Benchmark’s early bet on Uber, the kind of deal that gets a man called a billionaire on the internet. By our calculation, his likely slice of that stake at the IPO price was about 3.6 percent. Most of the rest of his fortune is his share of other Benchmark funds.

How much is Bill Gurley worth in 2026?

We land on about $220 million, inside a range of $170 million to $600 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. No filing we could open shows Gurley’s personal cut of any Benchmark fund, so the two biggest rows below rest on our assumptions about carried interest, the share of profits a venture firm keeps for itself.

Public estimates disagree for a plain reason: a firm’s stake is easy to mistake for a partner’s. Benchmark’s Uber holding was billions of dollars, but it belonged to the fund and its outside investors first, and the partners second.

How Bill Gurley built it

  • Led the Uber round early. Benchmark's roughly $12 million in 2011 became 150,079,000 shares by the 2019 IPO.
  • Learned stocks on Wall Street first. He spent four years as a research analyst, including lead analyst on the Amazon IPO, before venture.
  • Stopped writing checks in 2020. He left new deals to others and stayed out of the next fund, while keeping work with existing companies.

How we got to $220 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Uber carried interest $241 million Assumption built on documented shares. Benchmark held 150,079,000 Uber shares, Crunchbase News reported from the IPO filing. At the $45 IPO price that is $6.75 billion. We assume a 25 percent carry, split equally among the seven partners on the January 2011 fund filings.
Benchmark’s 2013 fund $184 million Assumption. TechCrunch reported a $425 million eighth fund with five names on the filing. We apply the 7.5 times net return reported across the first eight funds: $3.19 billion to investors, $3.68 billion of total profit at a 25 percent carry, $921 million of carry, split five ways.
Tax on both rows minus $128 million Assumption: 30 percent of the $425 million above. We don’t know his actual rate or how much was deferred.
Returns on what he kept $75 million Assumption: half of the $297 million after tax stayed invested for seven years at 6 percent a year, which adds about 50 percent to $149 million.
The half not invested minus $149 million Assumption: the other half of the $297 million was spent, given away or tied up in things we can’t value, so we don’t count it.
Total $220 million The rows sum to $223 million, rounded. Benchmark funds before 2011, the ninth fund, public stock he may hold and the book advance aren’t counted, because we couldn’t size them.

Our range comes from the same sums. A 20 percent carry with half of the money gone gives about $170 million. A five-way Uber split at the November 2026 share price, with nothing spent, gives about $600 million.

The arithmetic of a $6.75 billion stake

Wikipedia’s Benchmark entry says the firm put about $12 million into Uber in 2011. By the IPO that money had become 150,079,000 shares. Multiply by $45 and the stake comes to $6.75 billion, roughly 563 times the cost.

Now the part the headlines skip. Outside investors own most of a venture fund’s profit. If Benchmark’s carry on this deal was 25 percent, partners shared about $1.69 billion. Benchmark is known for an equal ownership and compensation structure, with no senior or junior partners, so the man who led the deal and sat on the board would get the same cut as everyone else. Divide by seven and you get $241 million. By our calculation that is 3.6 percent of the stake ($241 million divided by $6.75 billion), before tax.

Both inputs are our assumptions. We found no document stating Benchmark’s carry, and we assume the 2011 partner list applied to the Uber deal. With five partners in place of seven, the Uber row would be $338 million.

A 6 foot 9 analyst who stopped writing checks

Gurley played basketball at the University of Florida and stands 6 feet 9, a height that suits the name of his blog, Above the Crowd. Zillow’s 2024 board announcement lists four years as a Wall Street research analyst, including lead analyst on the Amazon IPO, before he became a Benchmark general partner in 1999.

In April 2020, CNBC reported he would stop making new investments and stay out of Benchmark’s next fund, while working with existing companies for about a decade. He sat on 11 boards at the time. That matters for the ledger: he gets no carry from the 2020 fund, which Wikipedia’s entry reports at more than 10 times investor capital. His money now depends on old stakes and what he did with the payouts.

The book, and what would move the figure

The latest dated event is his book. Penguin lists Runnin’ Down a Dream with a February 26, 2026 UK publication date, and NPR ran a piece on it on April 13, 2026. Advance terms aren’t public, so it adds nothing to our table. On a $220 million base, a book deal is a rounding error anyway.

The swing factor is timing. We can’t tell when Benchmark distributed its Uber shares. Uber closed at $66.71 on November 2, 2026, which would make 150,079,000 shares worth $10 billion. Under the same assumptions, a seven-way carry on that price is $358 million, or $117 million more than our row. A disclosed Benchmark distribution record would move this page more than anything else.

Bill Gurley net worth FAQ

How much did Bill Gurley make from Uber?

Was Bill Gurley the owner of Benchmark’s Uber stake?

No. The fund held the shares, and its outside investors owned most of the profit. Benchmark’s partners are known for sharing economics equally, which is why we divide the carry rather than credit him with the whole stake.

Is Bill Gurley still at Benchmark?

How accurate is the $220 million figure?

It is a rough estimate with a range of $170 million to $600 million. The share count and IPO price are documented, while the carry rate, the split and the tax rate are our assumptions.
