How much is Garry Tan worth in 2026?

We estimate Garry Tan’s net worth at about $45 million. Individual venture investors rarely disclose their share of a fund’s profits, so every dollar figure below that is not a deal price is our assumption. Public estimates differ because some count the funds’ value as his and some count only the Posterous sale.

How Garry Tan built it

  • Wrote the first cheque. He backed Coinbase early, in 2012, and the stake was reported at $680 million in 2021.
  • Sold a start-up. Twitter acquired Posterous, which he co-founded, in 2012.
  • Scaled the funds. Initialized grew from a $7 million first fund in 2012 to a $700 million fund in 2021.

How we got to $45 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Posterous sale $4 million Twitter bought Posterous in March 2012 and terms were not disclosed. A $20 million price appears in a reference entry we could not confirm, so we assume it and assume he received about a quarter, keeping most of it after tax.
Coinbase profit share $26 million Initialized put $300,000 into Coinbase in 2012 and 2013 and, with later rounds, $1.3 million in total, a stake of about 0.8% that Forbes valued at $680 million after the April 2021 listing. The stake belongs to the firm, not to Tan alone. A fund’s profit share is typically 20%, so $136 million. We assume Tan’s share is a quarter of that, $34 million, and about $26 million after tax.
Other fund profit share $12 million An assumed amount from other investments, including Instacart and Flexport, across four funds that grew from $7 million in 2012 to $700 million in 2021.
Salary and savings $3 million An assumed allowance. No pay figure is public.

The rows add up to $45 million. The Coinbase row carries most of the weight and rests on the share we assume he receives.

A $1.3 million bet on Coinbase

Wikipedia’s Garry Tan entry says he wrote Coinbase’s first seed cheque in 2012. A report based on Forbes puts Initialized’s seed money at $300,000 across 2012 and 2013, $1.3 million with the later rounds, and the stake at $680 million at the April 2021 listing. In an interview that month, Tan said he had sold only a fraction of his shares. Coinbase’s price has moved since 2021 and we have not re-priced the stake. Here is our calculation. $680 million divided by $1.3 million is about 520 times the money. At a standard 20% profit share the fund’s managers earned about $136 million, and at our assumed quarter that is $34 million for Tan, before tax.

Four funds, one pattern

According to Wikipedia’s Garry Tan entry, Initialized’s first fund was $7 million in 2012, the second $39 million in 2013, the third $115 million in 2016, and a fund closed in December 2021 at $700 million. That is a hundredfold growth in assets in nine years. Investments include Instacart and Flexport as well as Coinbase.

Posterous and the price nobody announced

Posterous, which he co-founded in 2008, was acquired by Twitter in 2012. TechCrunch reported that terms were not disclosed and that Posterous had raised $10.1 million in two venture rounds, so investors shared the proceeds and the founders’ part was a fraction. Tan had already left for Y Combinator, per the same report.

Y Combinator, 2023 onward

In August 2022 YC announced he would become president from January 2023. He wound down the Continuity Fund and, per the Wikipedia entry, set a goal of raising $2 billion across new funds. Those are goals for the firm, not income for him.

What would move the figure

Realised gains from Coinbase or other holdings in the funds, which are tied to share prices that change daily. We found no 2026 disclosure of his personal holdings.
