How much is David Bach Worth? David Bach Net Worth in 2026
David Bach’s net worth is estimated at $20 million as of November 2026. He wrote The Automatic Millionaire among about a dozen personal finance books, and co-founded AE Wealth Management, a firm that has since grown to manage tens of billions of dollars. How much is David Bach worth in 2026?
A man famous for turning daily coffee money into a fortune helped start a firm now holding nearly $50 billion, and the firm’s listed owners do not include him. SmartAsset’s review of the firm lists its owners as a holding company and family trusts tied to chief executive David Callanan and another Advisors Excel founder. So we do not give Bach an equity row, and we think that one decision explains most of the gap between our number and bigger ones.
We put him at about $20 million, in a range of $10 million to $35 million. Public estimates disagree mostly because some treat a co-founder title as a stake, and because several are plainly made up: we saw figures running into the hundreds of millions with no basis at all.
How David Bach built it
- Left banking for books in 2001. He left Morgan Stanley in 2001 to write, speak and teach full time.
- Turned one idea into a catalog. He built about a dozen books around simple saving rules, with more than 7 million sold by his count.
- Kept the money message simple. The Automatic Millionaire spent 31 weeks on the New York Times list.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Book royalties | $10.5 million | Assumption: more than 7 million copies at a blended $1.50 a copy, mostly paperbacks. The count is his own site’s. The rate is ours, as no advance has been published. |
| Speaking | $10 million | Assumption: 10 paid talks a year at $50,000 for 20 years. BigSpeak lists him at $50,001 to $100,000 for US events. |
| AE Wealth role and FinishRich Media | $5 million | Assumption: $500,000 a year for 10 years. Pay undisclosed, and we credit no ownership. |
| Morgan Stanley years | $2 million | Assumption: $250,000 a year for eight years, 1993 to 2001, as a partner in a team that managed over $500 million. |
| Taxes and living costs | minus $16.5 million | Assumption: about 35 percent tax and 25 percent living costs, so 60 percent of the $27.5 million above. |
| Investment gains | $9 million | The $11 million left came in over about 25 years, so we treat it as invested for 12 years on average at an assumed 5 percent a year after tax. That reaches about $19.75 million, a gain of about $9 million. Our assumption, and fitting for a man who preaches automatic investing. |
| Total | $20 million | $27.5 million earned, minus $16.5 million, plus about $9 million |
One speech buys 33,333 books
Books made him famous. They probably did not make him rich. By our calculation, at $1.50 a copy, one $50,000 speech equals the royalties on 33,333 books. His whole catalog of more than 7 million copies comes to about $10.5 million before tax, spread over a quarter century, which is about what we assume he earned from 200 talks.
The catalog also needs a caution. His own site says 7 million sold, while other bios say 7 million in print. Those are different things, and one deal shows why: Publishers Weekly reported in 2006 that Wells Fargo would give away 750,000 trade paperbacks of The Automatic Millionaire Homeowner to prospective mortgage buyers. That was also the year the same report counted about 4 million copies across his first six books and a million for The Automatic Millionaire. BigSpeak’s page says that title spent 31 weeks on the New York Times list.
The $50 billion firm he helped start
AE Wealth Management began in Topeka in April 2016, and RIABiz reported in 2018 that Bach was a co-founder alongside the three Advisors Excel founders, charging an asset-based fee of 45 to 60 basis points. SmartAsset’s page, updated in April 2026, shows about $49.8 billion in managed assets. If that 2018 fee still held, which we cannot confirm, the firm would bring in about $224 million to $299 million a year ($49.8 billion times 0.45 to 0.60 percent, by our math). A real stake in that would dwarf everything else on this page, which is exactly why our range would need rewriting if one were disclosed.
Latest money news
The latest dated money event is the new hardcover of The Automatic Millionaire, published December 30, 2025, at $32, per Penguin Random House, with the publisher citing over 2 million copies sold. A 15 percent royalty on that price would be $4.80 a copy, more than three times our blended rate, though we assume far fewer hardcover sales than the original.
What would move the figure
A disclosed AE ownership interest or an AE sale would be the largest swing. Beyond that, the December 2025 edition’s sales would add a little. Bach has lived in Florence, Italy, with his family, according to his Wikipedia biography, and no property price for that move has been published.
