His stake in it is not public, and neither are the sales of The Lean Startup, so the figure leans on stated assumptions, with the documented pieces called out.

How much is Eric Ries worth in 2026?

We estimate Eric Ries is worth about $18 million, within a range of $8 million to $50 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We know what his companies raised, not what he owns of them.

Public estimates vary because the visible numbers are company numbers. Money raised by a company does not belong to its founder, and nothing we could open gives his ownership or a valuation.

How Eric Ries built it

  • Funded a book directly. The Leader's Guide raised $588,903 on Kickstarter in 2015.
  • Built a new exchange. The Long-Term Stock Exchange has raised about $119 million since 2015.
  • Turned one idea into a franchise. The Lean Startup debuted at number two on the New York Times list.

How we got to $18 million

Documented items are marked. Everything else is our assumption.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Long-Term Stock Exchange stake $10 million Our assumption: 5 percent of a company we value at $200 million, a bit under twice the $119 million Wikipedia says it raised. The record gives funding but no valuation or ownership. We take no tax off because he has not sold.
The Lean Startup and later books $3 million Our assumption: about 1 million copies of the 2011 book at $2 to the author is $2 million, plus $1 million across The Startup Way (2017) and Incorruptible (2026). No sales count or advance is public.
Self-published guide $0.3 million Documented: his 2015 Leader’s Guide raised $588,903 on Kickstarter. We assume about half was left after printing, rewards and fees.
Speaking and consulting $6 million Our assumption: about $400,000 a year for fifteen years of talks, advising and corporate work after the book.
IMVU and early investing $3 million Our assumption. He co-founded IMVU in 2004, it raised about $19 million, and he stepped down as chief technology officer in 2008. We found no sale of his shares, so this is a small round number for shares and angel bets.
Tax and spending Minus $4.1 million Our assumption: one-third of the $12.3 million of realised money in the four rows after the stake.
Total $18.2 million $10 + $3 + $0.3 + $6 + $3 million is $22.3 million, less $4.1 million. We round to $18 million.

Only the Kickstarter figure and the funding totals are documented. The ownership numbers are our judgment, so the range is wide. Each percentage point of the exchange is worth $2 million at our assumed value.

$40 million raised per listed company

Here is our calculation. The exchange raised about $19 million from around 70 investors, then $100 million in June 2022 from James Walton, a grandson of Sam Walton. That is $119 million. Twilio and Asana began dual-listing on it in 2021 and ThredUp followed in 2023, three companies, which works out to about $39.7 million raised for each one. It is not a measure of what Ries owns, but it shows why a founder stake there is hard to price: Wikipedia’s account gives no valuation at all.

Books, a Kickstarter and a 2026 release

Wikipedia says The Lean Startup, published by Currency in 2011, debuted at number two on the New York Times list. A 2015 follow-up, The Leader’s Guide, was sold only through Kickstarter. The Startup Way came in 2017 and, the page says, sold less well. Incorruptible, from Authors Equity, is listed as a 2026 title, and Steve Blank wrote about it in June 2026, tracing its ideas to the exchange. The Lean Startup’s site lists meetups in 94 cities and 17 countries but gives no sales figures. We found no published advance for any of them.

A petition on earnings reports

In 2025 the exchange asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to let public companies choose to report earnings twice a year instead of four times. Apart from the new book, the latest documented event tied to his business is that petition, not a sale or a funding round.

What would move the figure

A new funding round or a sale of the company would reveal what his stake is worth. Publisher statements of copies sold would replace the book row.
