Two years that changed the sum

Her young adult novels sold modestly before Beach Read, as The Globe and Mail noted. Then the counts took off. If the March 2023 and April 2025 figures measure the same thing, which we can’t confirm, she added 8.1 million copies in 25 months. By our calculation that is 324,000 a month, worth about $486,000 a month to her before agents and tax at $1.50 a copy.

The launches were large too. Publishers Weekly said Funny Story cracked six figures in print units in its first week in 2024, and Goodreads readers voted her best romance five years in a row, 2021 through 2025.

Netflix brought the audience, not the fortune

People We Meet on Vacation arrived on January 9, 2026, and Netflix reported 17.2 million views and the top spot on its English film list for the first chart week. Penguin Random House said the film’s hashtag drew over 560 million views on TikTok in its first week.

Even so, screen money is only 7 percent of our gross figure ($1.5 million of $21 million). We assume options pay little until cameras roll, and only one of hers has been filmed so far. Should 1 percent of those 17.2 million views have turned into a book sale, that is 172,000 copies and $258,000 before agents and tax, which is a useful bonus and hardly a windfall.

What is coming next

Modern Classic, her next novel, is set for April 6, 2027, and it was announced on September 23, 2026. A $22 reading journal, Books Are My Happy Place, is listed for November 10, 2026. On screen, the latest reports we could open are older: Beach Read went to 20th Century in 2023 with Yulin Kuang attached, Book Lovers to Tango the same year, and Happy Place is planned with Jennifer Lopez’s production company for Netflix. Henry plans to adapt Funny Story herself.

What would move the figure: a published advance for Modern Classic, which would test our $1.50 a copy, or a second film actually reaching a screen. A real writing credit on Funny Story could also pay more than an option does.
