Born in Paddington, London, she is the daughter of Scottish actress Phyllida Law, and Eric Thompson, a writer-narrator.

She grew up in West Hampstead in north London, where she went to Camden School for Girls. Thompson spent much of her time in Scotland where her grandparents and uncle lived.

Growing up, she had a thing for language and literature, a trait which she attributes to her father, who shared her love of words.

Later on, she started studying for an English degree at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. While there, she experienced a “seminal moment” which turned her to feminism and inspired her to follow a career in acting.

At college, she became the only member of the Footlights, the university’s prestigious sketch comedy club. Also in the troupe where fellow actors Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

During the next period, she even served as the Vice President of Footlights and co-directed the troupe’s first all-female revue, Woman’s Hour.

The following year, she and her troupe won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for their sketch show The Cellar Tapes.

She made her professional debut at 23 years old when she toured in a stage version of Not the Nine O’Clock News.

Then, she turned to television, where much of her early work came with her Footlights co-stars Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.

The group had their first outing, followed by the one-off BBC show The Crystal Cube, in the regional ITV comedy series There’s Nothing to Worry About.

She then earned a role in the West End revival of the musical Me and My Girl, which proved to be her breakthrough, as the production received rave reviews.

At the end of the same period, she wrote and starred in her own one-off special for Channel 4, Emma Thompson: Up for Grabs.

Her fame increased considerably after her starring roles in two television mini-series: Fortunes of War, and Tutti Frutti.

For her performance, she won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress.

In the following year, she wrote and starred in her own sketch comedy series, this time for BBC, but had poor reviews.

She made her cinema debut in the romantic comedy The Tall Guy, alongside Jeff Goldblum, where she played the nurse with whom he falls in love.

The film behaved badly at the box office, but her performance received great praise in the New York Times.
