Born in Falls Church, Virginia, he grew up in Falls Church and Blacksburg, Virginia along with his two brothers and their parents, Eleanor, and Wilson Emerson Schmidt.
He attended and graduated from Yorktown High School after gaining varsity letter awards in long-distance running.
Upon graduation, he went to Princeton University, where he did architecture major but changed it and earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.
During the following period he lived at the International House Berkeley, where he met his future wife, Wendy Boyle. While there he went to the University of California from where he earned a M.S. degree.
He also earned a Ph.D. degree in EECS, with a dissertation about the problems of managing distributed software development and the tools for soling those problems.
During his early career, he had various technical position with IT companies such as Bell Labs, Zilong, among others.

After he joined Sun Microsystems as its first software manager, he became the director of software engineering, later on.
