Ken Follett’s net worth is estimated at $90 million as of November 2026. He started writing thrillers because his car needed fixing and a fellow journalist had been paid a £200 advance, his biography records. That repair bill has since turned into more than 198 million copies sold, and we think roughly one dollar from each is the number that matters.

Main income sources Book royalties and advances, screen rights

How much is Ken Follett worth in 2026?

We put him at about $90 million, in a range of $60 million to $130 million. This one leans on assumptions: his sales are public, but his royalty rate, his advances and his tax bills are not. His own site counts more than 198 million copies of 38 books sold in over 80 countries. The rest of the ledger below is our arithmetic, and each assumption is labelled.

Public estimates run from about $50 million to $450 million, and the gap has a plain cause. The high ones treat lifetime book income as if it were still in the bank. The low ones look like guesses at what a novelist can keep. Neither shows its sums, so here are ours.

How Ken Follett built it

  • Wrote his first thriller for repairs. He turned to fiction when his car needed fixing and a colleague had been paid a £200 advance.
  • Kept the backlist selling. His count rose from 192 million copies in May 2024 to 198 million by September 2025.
  • Changed publishers in his seventies. He left houses he had stayed with for 45 and 35 years and moved to Hachette for Circle of Days.

How we got to $90 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Book royalties and advances $200 million 198 million copies on the latest count, rounded up to 200 million because sales have continued since, at about $1 to the author per copy. The $1 is our assumption, a blend of hardbacks, cheap paperbacks and translations over 48 years.
Screen rights and other deals $5 million Our assumption. The one documented sale is The Third Twin to CBS for $1.4 million, then a record. Other fees were not disclosed.
Agent and office costs minus $31 million We assume 15 percent of the $205 million above.
Income tax minus $78 million Assumed at 45 percent of the remaining $174 million, the rate we apply to a Hertfordshire resident.
Spending and giving minus $24 million A quarter of the $96 million left after tax, by assumption.
Growth on what he kept $18 million A cautious 25 percent total growth on the remaining $72 million, also assumed.
Total $90 million Counted as the household’s money, since the books earned it. No split with his wife Barbara is public.

The backlist still sells 4.5 million books a year

Three dated counts give away something the usual headline figure hides. Publishers Weekly reported 192 million copies in May 2024, then 195 million that October. By the time Air Mail profiled him in September 2025, the figure was 198 million.

By our calculation that is 6 million copies in about 16 months, or 4.5 million a year. At our $1 a copy he grosses about $4.5 million a year, and after the 15 percent and 45 percent rows above he keeps about $2.1 million. All three counts are publisher round numbers (“more than”), so read this as a pace and not a sales report.

One novel carries more than its share. His 1989 cathedral novel, The Pillars of the Earth, had sold 26 million copies by 2017. That is 13 percent of his lifetime copies from one of 38 books, or about five times his average of 5.2 million a title. Eye of the Needle, the 1978 thriller that made his name, sits at more than 10 million.

Two good years we can actually see

Forbes’s lists of top-earning authors offer the only outside check on the $1 assumption. They put him at $20 million for the 12 months to June 1, 2010 and $14 million in 2012, both before tax. The 2012 report noted that the second Century novel was due that September. The $34 million from those two years alone is 17 percent of our lifetime book figure, which tells you his income arrives in lumps when a big novel lands. It also tells you our $200 million is more likely to be low than high.

Television paid him less than you might guess, at least on paper. The cathedral novel became a miniseries costing about $40 million in 2010, but that money went to the producers, and his rights fee was never published. A series of the prequel, The Evening and the Morning, was announced for development in March 2021. We count nothing extra for it until it gets made.

A new publisher after 45 years

His most recent money event is a change of house. After 45 years with Penguin Random House in the US and 35 with Pan Macmillan in the UK, he moved to Hachette for Circle of Days, his Stonehenge novel, published on September 23, 2025. The rights were sold by The Follett Office, and the terms were not disclosed. In 2021 he also gave away the proceeds of his short Notre-Dame book, about €148,000, toward restoring a different cathedral, in Dol-de-Bretagne, France.

What would move our figure: a disclosed advance on the Hachette deal, a screen version of the prequel, or a sale of the backlist. Air Mail expects him to pass 200 million copies soon, which adds little by itself. At $1 a copy, the last 2 million is worth about $2 million before tax.

Ken Follett net worth FAQ

How much did Ken Follett make from The Pillars of the Earth?

No figure is public. At our assumed $1 a copy, 26 million sold by 2017 comes to about $26 million before tax and agent fees, not counting the fee for the 2010 miniseries.

How many books has Ken Follett sold?

More than 198 million copies of 38 books, in over 80 countries and 40 languages, according to his own site. The count stood at 192 million in May 2024.

What did Forbes say Ken Follett earned?

Its author lists gave him $20 million for the year to June 2010, fifth in the world, and $14 million in 2012, 14th of 15. Those are earnings before tax, not wealth.

How old is Ken Follett?

He is 77. He was born in Cardiff on June 5, 1949, and worked as a reporter at the South Wales Echo before turning to fiction.

How do you estimate an author’s net worth when the contracts are private?

We multiply dated copy counts by an assumed payment per copy, then subtract assumed fees, tax and spending. Change the $1 to 75 cents and his figure falls to about $68 million. At $1.40 it reaches about $125 million.
