Born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia to Amalija, a patternmaker at a children’s clothing factory, and Viktor Knavs, who managed car and motorcycle dealerships, she grew up in a modest apartment in a housing block.
She has an older sister, Ines, as well as an older half-brother, from her father’s previous relationship.
As a teenager she and her family moved to a two-story house in Sevnica. Then, when she went to high school, she lived in a high-rise apartment in Ljubljana.
She attended the Secondary School of Design and Photography as well as studying at the University of Ljubljana for one year before dropping out.
Melania started modeling at the age of five after a famous photographer discovered her.
At 16 she already started doing commercials and posing for the Slovenian fashion photographer Stane Jerko.
After her career as a model gained her some sort of popularity, she changed her Slovene last name from Knavs to the German Knauss.
Then at the age of 18 she signed her fist modeling contract with a modeling agency in Milan, Italy.
Jana Magazine named her the one of the runner-ups in the 1992 Look of the Year contest. The magazine promised its top three contestants an international modeling contract.
Upon dropping out from university she modeled for fashion houses in Paris and Milan. While there, she met Metropolitan Models co-owner Paolo Zampolli, a friend of her future husband, Donald Trump.
At the advice of Zampolli she traveled to the United States, where he said he would like to become her agent.
The following year she moved to New York City, in an apartment in Zeckendorf Towers. She even had a roommate, photographer Matthew Atanian, thanks to Zampolli’s arrangements.
Melania started working in the United States before receiving a legal work visa. At the beginning, she struggled with finding work, and started asking Atanian, a photographer who worked for Marie Claire, to help her.
Her prospects were limited because her movements were not particularly graceful.
However, this changed after she met Donald Trump, who helped her get on the covers on several famous magazines like Style Weddings, New York Magazine, Avenue, Philadelphia Style, Vanity Fair, and Vogue.
Before her marriage with future President Donald Trump in 2005, she also posed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
She married Donald Trump in 2005 and together they have a son.
Today she is the first naturalized U.S. citizen to become First Lady, and the second one to be born overseas.
