- Took the money up front. About 85 percent of the $100.82 million extension was structured as signing bonus.
- Signed long deals early. He agreed seven years in 2016, then eight more in 2022 with a season left on the old deal.
- Kept producing after the payday. He scored 53 goals and 127 points in 2025-26, three seasons into the extension.

Our figure is $55 million, in a range of $45 million to $70 million. His NHL pay is documented to the dollar. What he kept of it, and what he earns off the ice, isn’t. We could not find a disclosed endorsement fee, company stake or property record, so those parts of the sum are our assumptions and we mark them that way.
Public estimates we saw run from about $25 million to about $45 million. Some date from 2023, before he collected $49.05 million in three seasons. Others look at contract totals without saying what tax does to them.
How we got to $55 million
| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| NHL pay through 2025-26 | $95.7 million | CapWages lists career earnings of $95,664,634. Its season tables add to slightly more, $95.9 million, so we use the lower figure. |
| NHL pay so far in 2026-27 | $4.5 million | The table shows a $3 million signing bonus and $9.15 million base this season. Assumption: the bonus is paid and about one sixth of the base, $1.5 million, has arrived by early November. |
| Endorsements | $10 million | Assumption, no fee is public. $1 million a year for 10 years. Tim Hortons commercials with Sidney Crosby are the one campaign we could confirm. |
| Taxes and agent fees | Minus $49.6 million | Assumption: 45 percent of the $110.2 million above, for federal and state income tax, road-game tax and representation. |
| Living costs | Minus $13 million | Assumption: an average of $1 million a year over 13 NHL seasons, lower early and higher now. |
| Investment returns | $7.5 million | Assumption: $25 million invested for an average of five years at a 6 percent simple return. Most of the money arrived after 2023, so we keep the holding period short. |
| Total | $55 million | The rows sum to about $55.1 million. |
The $800,000 salary that paid $16 million
The eight-year extension he signed on September 20, 2022 is $100.82 million in CapWages’s season table, though the same page’s text and press reports at the time round it to $100.8 million. Front Office Sports reported at signing that $85.3 million of it would come as signing bonuses. By our calculation, $85.34 million divided by $100.82 million is 84.6 percent of the deal.
That shaped when the cash arrived. The first three seasons paid $16.5 million, $16.5 million and $16.05 million, which is $49.05 million, or 48.7 percent of the money in 37.5 percent of the term. His cap hit for those years added up to $37.8 million, so he collected $11.25 million more than the salary cap charged the Avalanche.
The current season is the strange one. Base salary jumps to $9.15 million while the bonus falls to $3 million, then base drops back to $990,000 in 2027-28. Total pay for 2026-27 is $12.15 million, below the cap hit of $12,604,000. From 2027-28 on he makes about $9.9 million a year.
$126,000 a point
He finished 2025-26 with 53 goals and 127 points in 80 games, took the Rocket Richard Trophy and was a Hart finalist for the fifth time. Our math: $16.05 million divided by 127 points is about $126,400 per point before tax. At our 45 percent deduction he kept about $69,500 of each one. His 140-point season in 2023-24 came cheaper, at about $117,900 per point on $16.5 million.
The same page records a silver medal with Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and a semifinal winner against Finland. We put no money against it.
A long contract, and little else on paper
Earlier deals were smaller by far. His entry-level contract from 2013 paid $925,000 a season, and the seven-year deal from 2016 paid $44.1 million in total. Together they paid $46.9 million, less than the first three seasons of the current one.
Some pages online list several sponsors and beverage or property investments for him, without documents. We left those out. A confirmed stake would move the figure, and so would any endorsement fee that surfaced.
The largest known mover is already scheduled: $51.77 million remains on the deal from 2026-27 through 2030-31, including the $4.5 million we already counted. After our 45 percent, that total is worth about $28.5 million to him. The contract runs out in 2031, when he will be 35.
