How much is Pierre Omidyar Worth? Pierre Omidyar Net Worth in 2026
Pierre Omidyar’s net worth is estimated at $5.5 billion as of November 2026. In 2008 his 178 million eBay shares were worth about $4.45 billion. Since then eBay spun out PayPal, he sold stock, funded two philanthropic groups and reorganised his holdings, which is why nobody outside his office can say what is left.

How much is Pierre Omidyar worth in 2026?
We put Omidyar at about $5.5 billion. This one is a rough estimate: little is documented since the stock sales of the 2000s and 2010s, and we could not find a current beneficial ownership filing. Public numbers run higher because they assume he still holds most of the stock he held in 2008, yet eBay’s 2026 proxy no longer lists him among its 5 percent holders. We have built the figure from pieces and range it widely.
How Pierre Omidyar built it
- Sold down the stock. He held 178 million eBay shares in 2008 and is below 5 percent of eBay now.
- Set up giving early. Omidyar Network started in 2004 and has committed more than $992 million.
- Stepped back from the board. He chaired eBay until 2015 and left its board in 2020 as director emeritus.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| eBay shares | $1.5 billion | Assumption: about 15 million shares at about $100. The 2026 proxy, as summarised by FourWeekMBA, lists four holders above 5 percent of 445,011,181 shares and he is not one, so he holds under about 22 million shares. $100 is a discount to the $125 GameStop proposal, which eBay rejected. |
| PayPal shares | $1.0 billion | PayPal was spun off in 2015, and Wikipedia says he still owns a stake; the size and current value are our assumption |
| Cash and diversified investments | $3.5 billion | Assumption: proceeds of stock sales since the 1998 IPO, invested for decades |
| Philanthropy | minus $1.0 billion | Omidyar Network has committed more than $992 million, and he gave about $500 million in 2019; we net out about $1 billion and do not know how much overlaps |
| Media, property and other | $0.5 billion | Assumption: media ventures and property |
Total: $1.5 billion + $1.0 billion + $3.5 billion minus $1.0 billion + $0.5 billion = $5.5 billion. Treat every row as a plausible midpoint, not a measurement.
The $25 share
According to Wikipedia entry, in July 2008 his 178 million eBay shares were worth about $4.45 billion. Our calculation: $4.45 billion ÷ 178 million = $25 a share. His giving is large against that base: $992 million committed through Omidyar Network is about 22 percent of the 2008 holding’s value. The shares have also mostly gone: 5 percent of 445 million is about 22 million, so he sold or moved at least 156 million of the 178 million, 88 percent. At $25 a share alone that is $3.9 billion, which is why our cash row is large.
From chairman to bystander
eBay went public in September 1998. Omidyar chaired it until 2015, the year it spun off PayPal, and left the board in 2020 with the title of director emeritus. The Revenue Memo says he no longer holds a significant direct stake and sold most of his shares years ago.
Where the money goes
He started Omidyar Network in 2004 with his wife Pam and signed the Giving Pledge in 2010. Luminate was established in 2018, and he gave about $500 million to charity in 2019. His most recent documented giving is that 2019 gift.
Why estimates diverge
The high figures keep using an old share count as if it were current. Ours uses the 2026 proxy, which shows he is below 5 percent, and treats the sold shares as cash. Without a filing of his own, both camps are guessing.
What would move it
An SEC filing showing his holdings, a large sale, or a change in eBay or PayPal’s price. In May 2026 GameStop proposed to buy eBay at $125 a share, which eBay rejected on 12 May, and by August 2026 GameStop was reported to be reconsidering. A deal would price his remaining eBay shares. Each 10 percent move in the two stocks changes our figure by about $0.25 billion.
