Early life and background

RuPaul was born in San Diego, California. The first name Ru came from RuPaul’s mother, from roux, the base of gumbo and other creole dishes. After RuPaul’s parents divorced in 1967, RuPaul stayed with the mother and three sisters.

At 15, RuPaul moved to Atlanta, Georgia with sister Renetta to study performing arts. RuPaul struggled for years as a musician and filmmaker, playing the Celebrity Club as a dancer or with the band Wee Wee Pole. The 1990s brought club work in New York, the annual Wigstock drag festival and recognition in the UK through the Channel 4 series Manhattan Cable.
