Born in Long Beach, California, as the second of three sons, to Beverly Broadus, and Vernell Varnado, Snoop got his name after his stepfather, Cordozar Calvin Broadus Sr..
Growing up, he received his nickname Snoopy from his parents because of his looks, but they usually called him Calvin at home.
He started singing and playing piano from a young age at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church. Only in sixth grade he started rapping.
As a youngster he often ran into trouble with the law, and became a member of the Rollin’ 20 Crips gang in the Eastside of Long Beach.
Upon graduating from high school he ran into trouble again and police arrested him for possession of cocaine. In the next three years he spent his time in and out of jail.
Along with his cousins and a friend started to record homemade tapes as a group called 213.
Because of one of their early solo freestyles tapes, influential producer Dr. Dre called them to invite to an audition.
Dr. Dre thought him how to structure his lyrics and separate the thematics into verses, hooks, and chorus.
Upon starting recording he adopted the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg. He and Dr. Dre started working together, first on the theme song of the film Deep Cover.
Their collaboration continued a while after on Dre’s debut solo album, The Chrnic, with the other members of his former band, Tha Dogg Pound.
His success, due to his intense exposure, grew bigger and bigger.
Gangsta rap became the center of his world, and him often used as an example of violent and misogynistic musicians.
His debut album, Doggystyle featured a lot of rappers signed to or affiliated with the Death Row label, including Daz Dillinger, Nate Dogg and others.
In 1995, Snoop launched Doggy Style Records, Inc., a record label founded by him and registered with the California Secretary of State.
Snoop Dogg holds the dubious distinction of having seventeen Grammy nominations without a win. Throughout his career he has since sold over 23 million albums in the United States and 25 million albums worldwide
