Ice-T was born Tracy Lauren Marrow in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Los Angeles. His father, Solomon, worked as a conveyor belt mechanic, and his mother was Alice Marrow. As a teenager he lived with relatives in South Los Angeles.
There he shared a room with a cousin who listened to local rock stations, which sparked his interest in heavy metal. He started rapping in the early 1980s, which led to his first record deal and, later, a career that links hip-hop, metal and acting.
