Born in Massachusetts to Edwin A. Carell, an electrical engineer, and Harriet Theresa, a psychiatric nurse, as the youngest of four children, he is of Italian, Polish and German descent.

Raised as Roman Catholic, he completed his education at Nashoba Brooks School, The Fenn School and Middlesex School.

While in high school he played ice hockey and lacrosse. He used to play the fife with the other members of his family.

Later he joined a reenacting group portraying the 10th -North Lincoln- Regiment of Foot.

He spent time as a disc jockey, as well as a mail carrier in Littleton, Massachusetts. Early in his performing career he acted on the stage in a touring children’s theater company.

Later he acted in the comedy musical, Knat Scatt Private Eye, in a television commercial for Brown’s Chicken in 1989.

He made his film debut in a minor role in Curly Sue and later he earned a role as a member of The Dana Carvey Show, a sketch comedy program on ABC.
