How much is Suzanne Collins worth in 2026?

Our figure is $95 million, in a range of $60 million to $150 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. Her royalty rate and film terms have never been published, so we start from copies and box office and state each assumption.

Public estimates disagree partly because of an old mix-up. A 2013 figure of $55 million still gets repeated as her net worth, yet the original report described it as earnings for that year. Other estimates skip tax, agents and 17 years of spending, or leave out what her money may have earned since.

How Suzanne Collins built it

  • Spent 17 years writing for TV. She wrote children's television from 1991 and five Gregor novels before The Hunger Games came out in 2008.
  • Adapted the first film herself. She worked on the screenplay of the first Hunger Games film, based on her own novel.
  • Built it on five novels. Five books carry nearly all of our $155.5 million gross, and Sunrise on the Reaping sold 1.5 million copies in a week.

How the Hunger Games add up to $95 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Books, all formats $115.5 million 105 million copies at an assumed $1.10. Scholastic said more than 100 million in March 2025, in print and digital. We add 5 million as our assumption for sales since then, including the rest of Sunrise on the Reaping. The rate blends hardcover, paperback, ebook and foreign editions.
Film rights and participation $40 million Assumption: about 1.2 percent of the more than $3.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales for the five films released so far. No deal terms are public. She also adapted the first novel for the screen. Nothing is counted yet for the sixth film.
Tax and agents minus $70 million Assumption: 45 percent of the $155.5 million above, for federal and Connecticut tax plus agent commissions.
Living costs minus $17 million Assumption: $1 million a year for the 17 years from 2009 to 2026.
Investment gains $26.5 million Assumption: $40 million set aside by 2013, growing 4 percent a year for 13 years. 40 times 1.04 to the 13th power is about $66.5 million, a gain of $26.5 million.
Total $95 million The rows sum exactly.

Two years, nearly half the money

The Christian Science Monitor, citing Forbes, reported that she made about $20 million on its 2012 list and $55 million on its 2013 list. Together that is $75 million. Set against our lifetime gross of $155.5 million, it comes to 48 percent, by our calculation, across those two annual lists. Those were outside estimates of pre-tax earnings, so treat the share as a rough guide.

Her publisher’s accounts show the same spike from the other side. In the year ended May 2013, Scholastic’s trade unit fell 54 percent to $182.7 million, with the trilogy named as a key factor. Working backward, 182.7 divided by 0.46 gives about $397 million a year earlier, so the unit lost roughly $215 million of annual revenue. That is our arithmetic, and the unit sold other books too, but few authors can leave a hole that size in a public company simply because readers have finished the series.

Seventeen years of children’s television first

Her writing career began in 1991 on shows such as Clarissa Explains It All, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo and Little Bear. Five Gregor novels followed from 2003 to 2007. We count no separate row for any of this. The pay isn’t public, and it would barely register beside what came after September 2008, when The Hunger Games was published.

Book count is the odd part of the fortune. Our $155.5 million gross comes almost entirely from five Hunger Games novels, or about $31 million per book before tax. Prolific authors publish dozens of titles to reach similar money.

The 2025 book and the film due this month

Sunrise on the Reaping came out on March 18, 2025, with a first printing of 2.5 million copies and more than 1.5 million English-language copies sold in its first week. Publishers Weekly reported that US first-week sales were triple those of Mockingjay in 2010, according to Scholastic. In Britain, The Bookseller said it took just over £1.5 million, the publisher’s biggest week since 2007. It also pushed Scholastic’s fourth-quarter trade revenue up 19 percent to $97.3 million.

The next swing comes fast. Lionsgate’s film of Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for November 20, 2026. A big opening would sell more books and add film money this ledger doesn’t yet count. Every 10 million extra copies at our $1.10 rate adds about $6 million after tax and agents.
