And we are back with our series about superhero movies! Today’s topic is Most Expensive Superhero Films Released so Far.
I’ve added “so far” because there are a lot of upcoming superhero movies in the future. Why all the superhero films all of the suddenly?
Because we need them, as I was saying in the previous articles, people need to believe in superheroes and why not think they are one?
When it comes to being a superhero yourself, I always like to give the “Kick Ass” example. The story of a guy who decides is time to do something about his city. It is true, that guy gets a lot of beating, but the idea is what matters.
So, they are releasing more and more superhero movies because people like to relate with them, with their courage.
And we gathered around all the most expensive and most famous films in one top! Check the most expensive superhero films so far and tell us who is your favorite hero!
Plus, let’s take a moment and see if the money put into making these films were well spent or not.
10) Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) – $170 million
“Guardians of the Galaxy” was my favorite superhero film this year. I mean, come on, who can resist Chris Pratt and Baby Groot?
The movie had the best non-original soundtrack ever and in my opinion was the perfect soundtrack for the perfect movie.
The story? Well, it goes like this. There is a group of space criminals who are forced to work together to stop the fanatical villain Ronan the Accuser from destroying everyone in the galaxy.
And there is Peter Quill played by Chris Pratt who creates a team of space heroes known as the “Guardians of the Galaxy” to fight the evil and protect the entire galaxy.
Sounds like something you like? Well, then it means you have to see the movie if you haven’t seen it yet.

9) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) – $170 million
There is another great movie that tells the story of a well-loved superhero. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo this film tells the story of Steve Rogers also known as Marvel’s Captain America.
The second film about the adventures of the Captain America tells us the story of Steve who struggles to understand his role in the modern world and battle the villains in order to protect the planet.
This time he battles a new threat from old history- the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.
This superhero must face a world of dangerous threats and difficult moral complexities.
In this movie, Nick Furry, the director of SHIELD is killed by the mysterious assassin, the Winter Soldier.
With the help of Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson and The Falcon played by Anthony Mackie, Steve must act quick and save us all once again.
The budget for this film was estimated at $170 million which makes it one of the most expensive superhero films released so far.
8) X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) – $200 Million
At number eight we have the X-Men: Days of Future Past. I have to say I am a bit confused about this one. I don’t know if I like it or hate it.
Released this year, the film was directed by Bryan Singer tells us the story of the X-Men in their struggle to change the past for a better future.
They send Wolverine to the past in an ultimate intent to change history and prevent an event that results in the extinction of both humans and mutants.
After a number of failed intents of making a good X-Men movies, you may think that FOX would have giving up on the X-Men, but no.
They released this movie as another attempt to show us the future and the past of X-Men people.

7) Green Lantern (2011) – $200 Million
I must say that I was really disappointed when I saw this movie.
I am not saying that Ryan Reynolds was bad playing the role, because other people have said it million times so far. All I am saying is that this movie was a total failure.
The film ended up being the 13th biggest box office loss of all time, losing an estimated $90 million.
It is true, it had a promising advertisement campaign and a $200 million investment, but it wasn’t want people expected.
DC Comics has recently released a list of upcoming dates for ten movies that would launch their own cinematic universe and a new Green Lantern film is on the table. However there is no official confirmation yet if this will be a new film or it will start from scratch.
We will just have to wait and hope for the best.
6) Superman Returns (2006) – $209 Million
This sure is a surprise. On the sixth place we have a Bryan Singer directed film about Superman.
After a long absence, Superman comes back to Earth which gives us the storyline for this new Superman film called Superman Returns.
Now, ‘The Man of Steel” has to protect the mankind from a rising foe that threatens to bring the USA to global domination using the Superman’s prior weakness.
The famous character has to face an old enemy who plots to leave him powerless once and for all.
The guys from IMDB said it right:
“In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.”

5) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) – $210 Million
Another film about the X-Men adds to the pile of the most expensive X-Men films, The Last Stand being the priciest one.
Many of the fans were disappointed of how the movie turned out to be, and that a “cure” for mutant powers was introduced.
But most of them were upset that the director who made the franchise famous left to do Superman Returns.
That had a big impact on the film.
While the X-Men struggle with the loss of one of them- Jean Grey, the battle between humans and mutants has finally reached the boiling point when they found a cure for mutants.
Distribution: Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Halle Berry (Storm), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X).
4) The Avengers (2012) – $220 Million
Here is another superhero movie we all loved. Surely it was one of the best Marvel movies until the Guardians of the Galaxy came along.
As the plot well says, the “Earth’s mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.”
With a budget of $220 million, they managed to make an expensive but profitable film. And when I say The Avengers was a profitable film I mean it made $623,279,547 only in the USA.
That is quite an expensive movie for Marvel and Disney universe. The production must have cost a lot, but paying all the actors involved into this movie, sure was a quite bit of cash.
The ability of keeping all the contracts together must have cost Marvel big time, especially since the films leading up it turned all the actors into bigger stars.
And now it got us all excited about the second Avengers movie which will also have an estimated budget of $250 million.

3) Man of Steel (2013) – $225 million
This movie might not have performed as good as all the other DC and Marvel films, but it did pretty well, and so DC decided to give it another shot.
The short story? Well, Clark Kent, one of the last of an extinguished race disguised as an unremarkable human, is forced to reveal his identity when Earth is invaded by an army of survivors who threaten to bring the planet to the brink of destruction.
And now they are making a new Superman film where he needs to fight Batman played by Ben Affleck.
The film will be laying down the groundwork for Justice League films to compete with Marvel’s popular Avengers franchise because they need to, of course.
2) The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – $230 Million
One of my favorite films ever. It might be because of Tom Hardy’s acting or because of the Christopher Nolan’s talent, whatever it was, it was good.
This masterpiece (because that’s the proper way to call it) it’s one of the top 10 highest grossing films of all time and the top earner out of all ten of the Batman films.
The plot is simple, it happens when Bane, a former member of the League of Shadows, plans to continue the work of Ra’s al Ghul, the Dark Knight is forced to return after an eight year absence to stop him.

1) Spider-Man 3 (2007) – $258 Million
And number 1, most expensive superhero films released so far is Spider-Man 3, because it doesn’t matter how many movies about Spider-Man they will do, they are nothing compared to this one.
I know, some of you might not agree with me, but think about this. Spider-man 3 was the highest grossing Sony Spider-Man film and in the top 35 highest grossing films of all time.
However, they didn’t want to risk and release Spider-Man 4 and so they waited a few years and rebooted the entire franchise and released The Amazing Spider-Man to theaters five years after the release of Spider-Man 3.
While the new films do seem to be well revered, neither of the two had the same success as Raimi’s trilogy.
