How much is Bob Vila worth in 2026?

Our figure is about $27 million, inside a range of $15 million to $40 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented, with real estate the main exception. Public estimates vary widely, partly because they mix up a home’s asking price with what it sold for and count a house owned with his wife, Diana Barrett, as his alone. Some also treat his name on a media brand as if he still owned the company, and the BobVila.com footer lists Recurrent as copyright holder.

How Bob Vila built it

  • Left public TV for endorsements. After a 1989 dispute over Rickel ads, he had a syndicated show and Sears work within a year.
  • Renovated a house for resale. He and his wife bought a Palm Beach house for $12.5 million and sold it for $13.375 million.
  • Launched his own tool brand. He founded a tool brand in 2016 and sold its products on the Home Shopping Network.

How we got to $27 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Syndicated TV and Sears after tax $13.2 million Assumption: $1.5 million a year for 16 years, 1990 to 2006, kept at 55 percent. The show and the Sears deal are on the record, but their pay is not.
Other brand income after tax $5.5 million Assumption: $10 million gross, kept at 55 percent, for books, specials, BobVila.com and his 2016 tool brand.
Half of the Island Drive profit $10.1 million Recorded $33 million sale, minus the $6.1 million paid in 2005, is a $26.9 million gain. Take off 5 percent selling costs ($1.65 million, our assumption) and 20 percent capital gains tax on the remaining $25.25 million ($5.05 million, our assumption): $20.2 million. We credit half to Vila because the couple owned it together, though the house came from Barrett’s family. Renovation costs are unknown and ignored.
Investment returns $12.5 million Assumption: $10 million invested, earning a simple 5 percent a year for 25 years.
Spending Minus $14.4 million Assumption: $400,000 a year for 36 years, 1990 to 2026.
Total About $27 million The rows add to $26.9 million. This Old House pay, roughly $130,000 at an assumed $500 average over 26 episodes a year, is too small to get its own row.

By our calculation, the Island Drive gain was $33 million minus $6.1 million, or $26.9 million before costs. Divide that by the $800 an episode Vila remembered earning and you get 33,625 episodes. At an assumed 26 episodes a year, he would have been on This Old House for about 1,293 years.

“I am at heart a capitalist”

Boston Magazine’s oral history of the show has him starting at $200 an episode. His departure in 1989 came down to outside money: he appeared in ads for Rickel Home Centers, a rival of show underwriter Home Depot, and Home Depot complained. He later told The Wall Street Journal the line in this heading. Within a year he had a syndicated show and a job as a spokesman for Sears Craftsman tools. Bob Vila’s Home Again ran for 16 seasons, and the Sears relationship ended in 2006. Leaving public television was the best financial decision of his career, although we can only assume the size of it, because neither contract was published.

The house that outperformed the show

Barrett’s family had held the Everglades Island home since 1975, and the couple bought it from her mother’s estate for $6.1 million. The Palm Beach Daily News reported the rest: the 2005 purchase, an ask of $52.9 million in November 2023, about $48 million in April 2024, $39.5 million that September and $35.9 million in May 2025, then a close on June 12, 2025, at a recorded $33 million. That is $19.9 million below the opening ask. They also did a shorter flip: bought 345 Pendleton Lane for $12.5 million in December 2023, renovated it and sold it for $13.375 million in November 2024. That $875,000 spread covered a new kitchen, a new roof and new systems, so we count nothing for it.

Trade headlines we could see but not open say the 1949 house was torn down and the empty lot resold for about $39.2 million in June 2026, which would be $6.2 million more than the house fetched a year earlier. The full reports were blocked, so treat that as unconfirmed. If it is right, the couple’s remodeled rooms were worth less than nothing to the next owner.

Whose brand is it?

The BobVila.com timeline says the site joined the Recurrent Ventures portfolio in 2020, and it claims more than $115 million in online retail sales in 2023. That is merchandise moving through a website, and most of it never reaches him. The terms of his arrangement with Recurrent are private, which makes it the largest unknown on this page. A Martha’s Vineyard home is the other: it was listed at almost $16 million in 2016, and we could not find a closing price, so it is not a separate row.

What would move the figure: a disclosed brand deal with Recurrent, proof of what happened to the Vineyard house, or the price of any new home. In 2023 the couple were reported to be planning a move to a smaller condo.
