The best-known number in his career, a record $41.7 million Kickstarter, is also the one that overstates his wealth the most. How much is Brandon Sanderson worth in 2026?

We put Sanderson’s net worth at about $90 million. It is a rough estimate: Dragonsteel is private and nobody publishes his royalty statements. Public guesses vary because some treat crowdfunding totals as if they were profit and some use older sales counts. A Kickstarter raises gross money that then pays for printing, shipping, platform fees and staff, so only a slice of it ever becomes personal wealth. We count the slice, and we take off tax and spending.

How Brandon Sanderson built it

  • Went direct to readers. A 2022 Kickstarter raised $41.7 million from more than 181,000 backers for four books.
  • Kept his own publisher. Dragonsteel Entertainment published the four Kickstarter novels instead of his usual publisher Tor.
  • Finished the big series. Wind and Truth, book five of The Stormlight Archive, sold over 500,000 copies in two days.

How we got to $90 million

The rows below add up to about $88 million, which we round to $90 million. Where a number is our assumption rather than a reported fact, the last column says so.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
2022 Kickstarter About $13.9 million The campaign raised $41.7 million from more than 181,000 backers. After a 5 percent platform fee (over $2 million), printing, shipping and a doubled staff, we assume one third was profit.
2024 BackerKit campaign About $5.3 million Publishers Weekly reported in March 2024 that a leatherbound Words of Radiance had raised more than $16 million from about 55,000 backers. Same one-third assumption, applied to $16 million.
Book royalties About $100 million Over 50 million copies sold, per his agency, at an assumed blended $2 per copy across hardcover, paperback, ebook, audio and foreign editions. The count leaves out the Wheel of Time books he co-wrote.
Licensing and other sales About $8 million Our placeholder for rights deals and Dragonsteel products outside the campaigns. The price of the January 2026 Apple TV rights deal was not disclosed.
Taxes, agent and spending Minus $39 million Roughly 31 percent of the $127.2 million above, an assumption.
Total About $88 million Rounded to the $90 million headline.

The campaign that did not beat New York

In early 2022 Sanderson asked for $1 million to self-publish four novels he had written during the pandemic. Thirty days later the page had raised $41.7 million, CNBC reported. That was the most any Kickstarter had raised.

Then came the part headlines skipped. According to an account of a visit to his offices, he said the campaign did not earn him more money than selling the same books through a New York publisher would have, and fulfilling it meant roughly doubling his team. So much for a $41.7 million paycheck.

Our calculation: $41.7 million across about 181,000 backers is roughly $230 a backer. The two campaigns together grossed about $57.7 million, and we count $19.2 million of it, about a third. A reader who adds the gross figure to a wealth estimate is overstating it by about $38 million.

Wind and Truth, in numbers

His agency said in December 2024 that Wind and Truth, the final book of the first Stormlight Archive arc, sold more than 500,000 English-language copies across all formats in its first two days and reached number one on the New York Times and USA Today lists.

By our math, at an assumed average of $3 a copy, those two days earned him about $1.5 million, or 1.7 percent of our $88 million ledger total (1.5 divided by 88). A Cosmere role-playing game Kickstarter run with a games company in August 2024 passed $14.6 million, according to Wikipedia. We do not count that money as his, because it funds a game product rather than his own books.

What would move the number

In January 2026 his agency announced that Apple TV had acquired rights to a Stormlight Archive television series and a Mistborn film, with no price given, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. A disclosed fee or a production start would be the single biggest upward swing. Another crowdfunding campaign on the scale of 2022 would add roughly $14 million at our one-third margin. The royalty row is the softest line: each $1 change in the blended royalty per copy moves the headline by about $35 million after our 31 percent deduction (50 million times $1, less 31 percent).
