Chetan Bhagat’s net worth is estimated at $7 million as of November 2026. The book behind 3 Idiots, one of India’s biggest film hits, reportedly earned him about 11 lakh rupees for the screen rights, roughly $11,600 at today’s rate. His money comes from low-priced novels that sold in the millions, plus speaking and columns, and it adds up to far less than his fame suggests.

How much is Chetan Bhagat worth in 2026?
We put him at $7 million, with a range of $4 million to $15 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We convert at 94.7 rupees to the dollar, the rate on November 3, 2026. A weaker rupee makes an Indian author’s fortune look smaller in dollars, and it is one reason older figures run high.
Public estimates disagree for another reason too. It is tempting to treat retail book sales and film box office as an author’s own pay. They aren’t, and the 3 Idiots rights fee shows how wide that gap can be.
How Chetan Bhagat built it
- Priced books for mass readers. His novels sold at about 100 rupees, and he passed seven million copies by 2014.
- Left banking after a hit. He quit after about 11 years in banking, once The 3 Mistakes of My Life had taken off.
- Added speaking and columns. He has spoken at more than 100 organisations and written op-eds alongside his novels.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Banking years, about 11 years to around 2008 | $1 million | Assumption. About 11 years at firms including Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank. Pay isn’t public, so we assume about $90,000 a year saved. |
| Books, speaking, columns and film, 2008 to 2026 | $4 million | Assumption anchored on one number: Rs 8.75 crore in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 for October 2017 to September 2018. We assume Rs 5 crore a year on average for 18 years, or Rs 90 crore. After 30 percent tax that is Rs 63 crore, and keeping 60 percent leaves Rs 37.8 crore. |
| Returns on savings | $2 million | Assumption: half of the $5 million above stayed invested for 10 years at 6 percent a year in dollars, which adds about 79 percent to $2.5 million. |
| Total | $7 million | Rows sum to $7 million. Any home he owns is inside these rows, since we found no property record for him. |
The $11,600 film
A 2010 legal analysis on the SpicyIP blog said Vinod Chopra Films paid about Rs 11 lakh for the screen rights to Five Point Someone and that Bhagat did not dispute being paid. At today’s rate that is about $11,600. He has argued in public about credit for the film since then. On money, the record gives him one small check.
Why millions of copies buy less than you’d think
AFP reported more than seven million copies sold in 2014. That is the last total we could confirm from a reliable page, and it is 12 years old. The Christian Science Monitor reported that his books were deliberately priced at about 100 rupees. One title was priced at Rs 95, according to Outlook.
Now the sum. Assume a 10 percent royalty, which is our guess, since his contracts aren’t public. Seven million copies at Rs 100 pays Rs 10 a book, or Rs 7 crore in total. By our calculation that is about $739,000 at today’s rate, and less than the Rs 8.75 crore he was credited with earning in a single year in 2018. His first decade of book sales would have been worth less than one good later year across all his work.
That doesn’t make the books small. Columnist Vivek Kaul, citing Mint, wrote in 2012 that 500,000 copies of a 575,000 first printing went to retailers in one day for one of his titles. Under the same royalty, that printing pays Rs 57.5 lakh, more than five times the 3 Idiots fee (57.5 divided by 11).
Trading a banker’s desk for the lecture circuit
He left banking after The 3 Mistakes of My Life, published in 2008, took off. The later income looks like a speaker’s as much as a novelist’s. A bureau that books him lists talks at more than 100 organisations in over 75 cities and op-eds for several newspapers. He was No. 82 on the 2017 Forbes India Celebrity 100 and No. 90 the next year, near the bottom of a list dominated by film stars and cricketers. We found no reported fee we trust, so speaking stays inside the $4 million row.
New publisher, and what would move the figure
HarperCollins India released 12 Years: My Messed-Up Love Story on October 1, 2025, with terms undisclosed. That followed a 2018 deal for six books with Amazon Publishing, also undisclosed. The largest open item is film: Sony acquired rights to One Indian Girl in 2022 for a Hindi film, with no money terms given. A big film or a new long-term book contract with a disclosed price would move this page. So would the exchange rate: at 80 rupees to the dollar, the rupee-based row would be about $4.7 million.
