How much is Dilip Shanghvi worth in 2026?

We estimate Dilip Shanghvi is worth about $17 billion, within a range of $11 billion to $24 billion. The company is listed, so share counts and prices are public. What is not public is how the family’s holding company is split among relatives, so this is a rough estimate at the edges.

Public estimates differ mostly on that split. Some count only his 9.6 percent. Some count the whole promoter group of 52.68 percent as if it were his. Neither is right: the first ignores the holding company he runs, the second ignores his family.

How Dilip Shanghvi built it

  • Held shares through a family company. Shanghvi Finance owns 40.30 percent of Sun Pharma, beyond his direct 9.60 percent.
  • Kept the promoters in control. The promoter group holds 52.68 percent of Sun Pharma as of September 2026.
  • Kept buying growth. Sun Pharma's Organon acquisition was approved by Organon shareholders in 2026.

How we got to $17 billion

We start from the price of Sun Pharma shares on October 30, 2026 (about 1,833 rupees) and the total of about 2.4 billion shares, which is his 230.4 million shares divided by 9.6 percent. That makes the company about $46 billion at about 95 rupees to the dollar, the October 30, 2026 close.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Shares in his own name $4.4 billion The shareholding pattern for September 2026 lists him at 9.60 percent of Sun Pharma, about 230 million shares.
Shanghvi Finance Private Limited $14.9 billion The same filing shows this company holds 40.30 percent, worth about $18.7 billion. We attribute 80 percent to him. That share is our assumption: his wife, children and one other family member hold 0.61 percent directly, and other relatives are not itemised.
Holding company discount Minus $2.2 billion Our assumption: 15 percent off the $14.9 billion, because a stake in an unlisted holding company cannot be sold at the screen price.
Total $17.1 billion $4.4 + $14.9 less $2.2 billion = $17.1 billion, which we round to $17 billion.

We add nothing for other promoter entities (together about 2.2 percent of Sun Pharma), for property, or for stakes outside the company. The shareholding pattern shows almost none of the promoter shares pledged, so we make no adjustment for that.

Three quarters of the fortune is behind one door

Here is our calculation. After the discount, the holding company is worth $12.7 billion in our ledger. That is 74 percent of the unrounded $17.1 billion. His directly held shares, worth $4.4 billion, are the other 26 percent. A fortune that looks like a 9.6 percent stake is really a 40 percent one, held one level up.

The sensitivity is large. Each 1 percent move in the share price moves our figure by about $170 million, and each 10 points in the share we attribute to him moves it by about $1.6 billion (10 percent of $18.7 billion, less the 15 percent discount).

A profit that fell, a share price that rose

On October 30, 2026 Sun Pharma reported revenue of about 16,199 crore rupees, up 11.9 percent, and net profit of 1,989 crore rupees, down 36 percent because of a one-time loss of 1,269 crore rupees, according to The Hans India. The shares were trading about 4 percent higher at 1,833.30 rupees at midday. Kotak Neo reported that Organon shareholders approved Sun Pharma’s acquisition of the company, expected to close in early 2027 subject to approvals.

What would move the figure

The Organon closing is the next event in the record. The price Sun Pharma pays, and how it funds the purchase, will affect the share price that carries everything above. Any change to the family holding structure, or a share sale by the promoter group, would also replace our assumptions with filed numbers.
