Dolly Parton is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actress, author, businesswoman, and philanthropist and her current net worth is $550 million.
Born in Sevier County, Tennessee, she is the fourth of 12 children of Robert Lee Parton, a farmer and construction worker and his wife Avie Lee.
Parton often described her family as a dirt poor one, with her father paying the doctor who delivered her a bag of oatmeal.
She even mentioned her family in her early songs like Coat of Many Colors and In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad).
Her parents along with their 12 children lived in a rustic, one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, located just north of the Greenbrier Valley of Great Smoky Mountains.
Growing up, music played an important part in her life. She had publicity performed in the church pastored by her grandfather.
At seven years old she started playing a homemade guitar and at the age of eight she received her first guitar from her uncle.
After that she started performing on local radios and television programs as a child.
By ten she has already appeared on The Cas Walker Show on two of the important radios of that time.
At 13 she recorded the single Puppy Love on a small Louisiana label, and starred at the Grand Ole Opry. There she met Johnny Cash, for the first time, who encouraged her to follow her instincts.
Upon graduating, she relocated to Nashville where her initial success came as a songwriter.
She signed with Combine Publishing shortly after she got to Nashville and with her frequent songwriting partner, Bill Owens, her uncle.
Together they wrote several number one songs during that time, including two-top ten hits.
Her songs went to many famous artists at that time, including Hank Williams Jr. and Kitty Wells.
Her luck changed when she signed with Monument Records, at 19. She got a part as a bubblegum pop singer.
After releasing a couple of singles, none of the charted; well except Happy, Happy Birthday Baby which did not crack the Billboard Hot 100.
Her first country single, Dumb Blonde reached number 24 on the country chart in 1967.
Parton is the most honored female country performer of all time, and has achieved commercial success again in our times. And has released albums on independent labels since 2000, including albums on her own label, Dolly Records
