Jan Koum’s net worth is estimated at $8 billion as of November 2026, with a plausible range of $5 billion to $14 billion.

He arrived in California from Ukraine at 16, dropped out of San Jose State, and turned an iPhone app into a $19 billion exit. Then he sold so much Facebook stock so early that the shares he did keep are the swing factor. If he had kept all 101 million shares and awards he was given, they would be worth about $62 billion at today’s price. He holds a fraction of that, and he has just given away $200 million of it to a hospital.

How much is Jan Koum worth in 2026?

We put Jan Koum at about $8 billion. This is a rough estimate: his stock sales to 2018 are documented in company filings, but he stopped filing as a Facebook insider when he left its board that year, so what he holds today is not public. We assumed half of his remaining shares are still held and priced them at $612 a share, the Meta close on 28 October 2026.

Public estimates run higher, around $15 billion, and a likely cause is that they assume he kept most of the stock. We cannot see his holdings, so we show where each piece of ours comes from.

How Jan Koum built it

  • Kept the product simple. Facebook paid about $19 billion for WhatsApp in 2014, and Koum received 68.7 million Facebook shares at closing.
  • Sold stock on a schedule. He made more than 120 separate sales from April 2016 under a pre-set trading plan.
  • Gave a large share away. His foundation announced a $200 million gift to a Jerusalem hospital in May 2026.

How we got to $8 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Facebook stock sold, 2015 to May 2018 $5.2 billion About $8 billion of sales by the time he left, Fortune reported from Bloomberg data. In the year from April 2016 he sold more than 30 million shares for about $3.7 billion, CNBC reported from SEC filings. We assume 35 percent went in taxes and fees, which is our assumption, not a reported figure.
Meta shares we think he still holds $3.4 billion Our count: a 2014 filing, Business Today reported, showed 76.4 million Facebook shares plus a 24.9 million share award vesting over four years. We assume half of the award was withheld for tax (12.5 million kept), for 88.9 million shares. Subtract 12.6 million gifted in 2016 and about 59 million sold (our conversion of $8 billion at an assumed average of $135 a share), and about 17 million are left. His holdings stopped being public after 2018, so we assume he kept half of them: 8.65 million shares. At $612, Meta’s close on 28 October 2026, that is $5.3 billion, and we take 35 percent off for tax on a sale. The least certain row here.
Giving, the chateau and living costs since 2018 Minus $0.5 billion Gifts listed on his Wikipedia biography to hospitals, schools, universities and relief funds add up to about $300 million, including $200 million to a hospital in May 2026. Wikipedia says he paid about 65 million euros for a French chateau in November 2023, roughly $70 million on our assumed rate of 1.1 dollars to the euro. We assume $15 million a year of living costs for 8 years, $120 million. The three come to about $490 million.

The rows add to $8 billion. The rows add to about $8.1 billion, which we round to $8 billion. The sales are filed or reported; the stock row is mostly an assumption, which is why the range is wide. We did not add investment returns on the cash, so the figure leans cautious on that side.

What 93.6 million shares would be worth

Our calculation: 76.4 million shares plus a 24.9 million share award is 101.3 million. At $612 a share that is $62.0 billion. The $8 billion he sold by 2018 is 13 percent of that. The rest was gifted, withheld for tax, still held or sold later.

The sales were mechanical. CNBC reported that all were made under a pre-set trading plan, with more than 120 separate sales in the year from April 2016.

Gifts, then a very large one

His foundation’s $200 million for Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center was reported on 10 May 2026, to fund a new hospital tower. Wikipedia also lists $36 million from his foundation to Milken Community School in 2026 and, in 2022, $17 million to the European Jewish Association and $10.6 million to a Jewish communities federation for Ukraine relief.

We count gifts only from the dated and undated ones Wikipedia lists, and treat them as coming out of his own pocket since 2018.

What would move the figure

Meta’s share price is the main driver. Each $100 move changes our stock row by roughly $0.87 billion before tax, because we count 8.65 million shares. A disclosure of his actual holdings would settle it, and further gifts or a sale would pull it down.
