How much is Jodi Picoult worth in 2026?
Our figure is $35 million, in a range of $20 million to $60 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. None of her contracts has been published, so we start from copies and apply stated assumptions at each step.
Public estimates differ mostly because they rest on different copy counts. One reference says about 40 million, Penguin’s UK page says 60 million and the Authors Guild says more than 63 million. Some also treat retail sales as if the author kept them.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Books, all formats | $63 million | 63 million copies in print, the most recent count we could open, at an assumed $1 a copy across hardcovers, paperbacks, ebooks and foreign editions. Copies in print can exceed copies sold, so this leans high. |
| Film and television rights | $2 million | Five adaptations listed. Assumption: $1 million for the 2009 feature film and $250,000 each for four Lifetime movies. |
| Tax and agents | minus $29 million | Assumption: 45 percent of the $65 million above is $29.25 million, for income tax and agent commissions. Rounded. |
| Living costs and property | minus $12 million | Assumption: $400,000 a year for 30 years, including her home in Hanover, New Hampshire. That leaves $24 million. |
| Investment returns | $11 million | Assumption: half of that $24 million was invested on average, or $12 million, earning 3 percent a year after inflation for 30 years. $12 million times 0.03 times 30 is $10.8 million. Rounded. |
| Total | $35 million | The rows add exactly. |
What one novel is worth
Divide 63 million copies by 30 novels and you get 2.1 million copies a book. At $1 a copy that’s $2.1 million before tax and about $1.16 million after our 45 percent, by our calculation. A respectable sum, spread over the years it takes to write a book and the decades it stays in print.
The $1 is the assumption to attack. Hollow Bones lists at $34 in hardcover, so a 15 percent royalty (our assumption, her contract isn’t public) would pay about $5.10 on each new copy. Our blended rate is a fifth of that because we assume most of the 63 million copies were cheaper editions, sold abroad, or both.
Hardcover launches also got smaller for a stretch. Publishers Weekly’s opening-week counts fell from 79,966 for House Rules in 2010 to 37,215 for Leaving Time in 2014, a 53 percent drop by our math, even though Leaving Time still topped the hardcover list. Her fortune leans on the backlist.
The movie that made more noise than money
My Sister’s Keeper grossed $95,714,875 worldwide on a $30 million budget. Our $1 million for the rights would be about 1 percent of that gross. Studio accounting aside, a novelist’s film fee rarely competes with a long-running backlist, and here the whole screen row is about 3 percent of her gross ledger.
The publishing move was the bigger business event. After 19 books with Atria, she announced a three-book deal with Ballantine in September 2012. We found no reported price, and we don’t guess one here: it sits inside the $1 a copy.
This autumn’s calendar
Hollow Bones went on sale on September 15, 2026, and her publisher’s page now calls it a number one New York Times bestseller. Her tour schedule covers Canada, the US, the UK and Ireland, with the UK edition due on November 5. The Authors Guild Foundation’s 2027 gala page lists her for the Preston Award, which is good for the shelf and neutral for the ledger.
Two things would move the figure most. A firm sales count: if 40 million is right and the rest of our math holds, gross falls by $23 million and the figure drops about $12.7 million (23 times 0.55) before any change in returns. And a new screen deal, which could add more in one signature than our entire film row.
