How much is Danielle Steel worth in 2026?

Our figure is $390 million, in a range of $250 million to $600 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. Her contracts have never been published, so we start from copies sold and check the result against reported yearly earnings.

Public estimates disagree mainly because the copy count does. Penguin Random House says about a billion, another reference says more than 800 million. Those extra 200 million copies are worth about $160 million before tax at our rate. A 55-room house and decades of spending are also hard to price from outside.

How Danielle Steel built it

  • Published for more than 50 years. Her first novel came out in 1973 and her publisher still has new titles scheduled for 2027.
  • Treated output as the business. More than 182 novels carry nearly all of our estimated $800 million in gross book money.
  • Kept selling screen rights. Her filmography lists 24 productions, most of them made for television.

How we got to $390 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Books, all formats $800 million One billion copies at an assumed $0.80 a copy, blending $29 hardcovers with paperbacks, ebooks and foreign editions. The publisher marked 1 billion copies in 2023. Her royalty rate isn’t public.
Film and television rights $12 million 24 listed productions, most of them television films. Assumption: $500,000 each.
Tax and agents minus $365.4 million Assumption: 45 percent of the $812 million above, for federal and California tax plus agent commissions.
Living costs and property minus $200 million Assumption: $5 million a year for 40 years, including a 55-room San Francisco house and a second home in Paris. No purchase price is confirmed.
Investment returns $140 million Assumption: savings averaging $100 million, earning 4 percent a year after tax, for 35 years. 100 times 0.04 times 35 is 140.
Total $390 million The rows sum to $386.6 million, rounded. Mostly assumptions, labelled as such.

Testing the $0.80 a copy

It is the assumption everything rests on, so we tested it. $800 million spread across the 53 years since Going Home in 1973 is about $15.1 million a year, by our calculation. In the only multi-year record we could open, Forbes estimated her earnings at $35 million in 2011, about $23 million in 2012 and $15 million for the year to June 2016. An average of $15 million sits at the low end of those peak-career years, which seems fair given how small the 1970s numbers must have been.

Per novel, the ledger says about $4.4 million before tax ($800 million divided by 182). That’s a steady, unglamorous sum. Reported earnings fell 57 percent between 2011 and 2016, from $35 million to $15 million, while she kept publishing. A backlist this size ages slowly, but it does age.

Still shipping at 79

Ruthless went on sale on September 29, 2026 at $29 in hardcover, with large print following on November 3. 24 Hours is due on January 5, 2027. Few people with a nine-figure fortune still keep a publication calendar. A paperback of last year’s A Mind of Her Own arrived in February 2026, so the same title earns twice.

Her Steel Gallery in San Francisco ran from 2003 to 2007, and she still curates shows a few times a year. We give the art nothing, since no price or stock value has been published.

Two things could move this figure sharply. A sale of the San Francisco house would put a real price on an asset we can’t value today. A hard, audited copy count would matter even more: each 100 million copies at our rate is worth about $44 million after tax and agents.
