How much is Dan Brown worth in 2026?

We estimate Dan Brown at about $190 million, in a range of $150 million to $250 million. The sales are public and the contracts are not. The per-copy figure below comes from a sum we can show, and returns and spending are assumptions. Public estimates vary widely, usually because they repeat old income figures as if nothing went to agents, the tax office or daily life. Any division of assets from his marriage, which ended in 2019, is not public, and would lower this total.

How Dan Brown built it

  • Sold the film rights in 2003. Columbia bought The Da Vinci Code rights that June, along with Angels and Demons and future Langdon books.
  • Kept the same hero across decades. The Secret of Secrets, published in September 2025, was another Robert Langdon novel.
  • Gave money to schools and libraries. He gave $337,000 to the Ritman Library in 2016 and joined a $2.2 million gift to Exeter in 2004.

How we got to $190 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Book royalties, after fees and tax $143.4 million Penguin Random House said over 250 million copies in print in January 2025. We assume 90 percent sold, or 225 million, at $1.25 per copy (explained below): $281.25 million. Less a 15 percent agent fee and 40 percent tax on the rest: $143.4 million.
Film and TV rights, after tax $12 million Film Stories reports $6 million for the rights to his 2003 novel. Our assumption is $20 million gross across the films and the TV series, less 40 percent tax.
Returns on savings $80 million Our assumption: 4 percent after tax on an average $100 million for 20 years.
Spending Minus $40 million Our assumption: $2 million a year for 20 years.
Gifts Minus $2.5 million $2.2 million to Phillips Exeter Academy with his siblings in 2004 and $337,000 to the Ritman Library in 2016. We charge the whole first gift to him, which slightly understates his total.
Total About $190 million $143.4 + $12 + $80 – $40 – $2.5 million = $192.9 million, which we round to $190 million.

Where $1.25 a copy comes from

His biography credits The Times with an income figure of $250 million after his biggest novel, and says his books had sold over 200 million copies by 2012. Those two facts are from different moments, but dividing one by the other gives $1.25 per copy, by our calculation. We use that as our royalty assumption for the whole career. It is a blunt tool, and each 10 cents is worth about $11.5 million on the final figure. At $1.00 a copy the total is about $164 million, and at $1.60 about $233 million.

The same sum shows why the movie rights look so small. About 80 million copies of The Da Vinci Code at $1.25 is $100 million gross, roughly 17 times what Sony paid for the screen rights. That $6 million is also less than 1 percent of the film’s $760 million gross, though Brown’s later fees and any share of those films are not public. The 2003 Columbia deal also covered Angels and Demons and future Langdon books, so if the $6 million covered all of that, it looks even cheaper in hindsight.

224,685 hardcovers in under two weeks

The Secret of Secrets came out on September 9, 2025, with a first printing of 1.5 million copies. Publishers Weekly’s chart for the week ended September 20 shows 72,236 hardcovers that week and 224,685 for the year at a $38 list price. At an assumed 15 percent hardcover royalty, that is about $1.28 million from US print hardcovers in under two weeks, by our calculation. If all 1.5 million first-printing copies sell at list, the same rate gives about $8.55 million. That still ignores ebooks, audio and foreign editions.

What 2026 added, and what would move the figure

In March 2026 he received the Chevalier rank of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which adds prestige and no line to this ledger. We found no 2026 disclosure of his sales, advance or investments. Three things would move the figure: a screen deal for The Secret of Secrets, a reported advance on a next book, or better evidence on how he invests. That last one is the biggest unknown here, since returns make up $80 million of our total. At 3 percent rather than 4 percent the total drops by $20 million.
